Replaced a hard wired garbage disposal that wasn't working for years. Below are helpful tips as to what should and shouldn't be drained down a garbage disposal.
What can I put down my garbage disposal?
A garbage disposal is a convenient appliance for disposing of food waste in a kitchen sink, but not all food waste can be safely processed by a garbage disposal. Here is a list of items that can be put down a garbage disposal:
• Fruit and vegetable scraps: Most fruit and vegetable scraps, such as peels, skins, and cores, can be safely processed by a garbage disposal.
• Meat and poultry scraps: Small amounts of cooked meat and poultry scraps can be safely processed by a garbage disposal. However, bones, fat, and gristle should be avoided as they can clog the disposal and pipes.
• Dairy products: Small amounts of dairy products, such as yogurt and cheese, can be processed by a garbage disposal. However, large amounts of dairy products can cause the disposal to clog.
• Bread and pasta: Small amounts of bread and pasta can be processed by a garbage disposal. However, large amounts of these items can cause the disposal to clog.
It's important to avoid putting the following items down a garbage disposal:
• Grease and oil: Grease and oil can solidify in pipes and clog the disposal and pipes.
• Coffee grounds: Coffee grounds can cause clogs and can also cause pipes to corrode over time.
• Fibrous foods: Foods like celery, corn husks, and artichoke leaves can wrap around the blades and clog the disposal.
• Rice and beans: Rice and beans can expand when wet and cause clogs in pipes.
• Bones: Bones can damage the blades of the disposal and can also cause clogs in pipes.
It's important to run water while using the disposal and to only put small amounts of food waste down at a time. Also, it's good practice to periodically run ice cubes and lemon or citrus peels through the disposal to help keep it clean and fresh-smelling.
