Your flowers may not be done blooming—they might just be waiting for you to remove the spent ones.

Deadheading redirects the plant's energy away from seed production and back toward new growth and, for many varieties, more flowers. It's one of those simple techniques that keeps your garden producing longer into the season.

Here's what actually works:

For petunias, marigolds, zinnias, cosmos, geraniums, dahlias, and roses, remove the entire faded flower including the swollen seed pod beneath it. These are your repeat-blooming champions and they'll reward you with more blooms.

Snapdragons, delphiniums, phlox, and red hot poker respond better when you cut the finished flower stalk back to healthy leaves or side s*oots—don't just pinch the top.

With roses, cut just above an outward-facing leaf with five leaflets. This pushes new growth away from the center of the plant.

Daylilies want individual wilted flowers removed as they fade, then cut the entire stalk near the base once all buds are finished.

Peonies and hydrangeas won't typically produce another full flush that season, but removing spent blooms keeps things tidy and prevents wasted energy on seeds. With hydrangeas, be careful—some varieties set next year's buds on old wood.

Butterfly bush will keep blooming longer with deadheading and you'll prevent unwanted seedlings from spreading.

One note: Angel's trumpet is highly toxic. Wear gloves, avoid touching your eyes or mouth, and keep all parts away from children and pets.

Check your garden once or twice a week and deadheading stays quick and easy. Late in the season, though, leave some seed heads on coneflowers, cosmos, and roses if you want seeds for birds, winter interest, or plants that reseed themselves.

Deer can be surprisingly picky. 🦌 A few things I’ve learned when choosing plants they’re less likely to bother:

🌿 Strong scents from lavender, rosemary, thyme, and sage can make them less appealing.
🌸 Yarrow and ornamental alliums have also been reliable choices for me.
🌱 I still protect young plants because tender new growth can tempt even picky deer.
💧 During dry periods, deer may eat plants they normally ignore.

Nothing is completely deer-proof, but planting strategically can definitely help. 🌼
