🏠 Bricklayer’s Life: 1926 Vs 2026 🧱

In 1926, most bricklayers travelled to work by bike, tram, or on foot. Tools were basic, mortar was mixed by hand, and lifting everything was pure hard graft.

Fast forward to 2026...

Bricklayers now have laser levels, mixers, telehandlers, battery tools, and machinery that can save hours of labour. Wages are much higher, but so are the costs of living. Energy, insurance, fuel, food, tools, vans, and housing all take a much bigger bite out of people’s earnings.

Back then:

🔹 Harder physical work
🔹 Fewer modern tools
🔹 Simpler lifestyles
🔹 No mobile phones or internet bills

Today:

🔹 Better technology
🔹 Safer working conditions
🔹 Better transport
🔹 Higher wages
🔹 Much higher living costs

A century later, bricklayers are still building the homes that keep the country moving.

But which generation had the better deal?

🧱 The Future of Bricklaying Starts With Apprenticeships

Bricklaying will not survive unless more young people are brought into the trade properly.

Everybody talks about the labour shortage, but not enough people are doing something about it. If we do not get more apprentices on the trowel now, the industry will pay for it later.

Young people need real opportunities, not just advice. They need placements, proper guidance, and a clear path into the trade. That is exactly why Bricklaying Jobs UK matters.
