Wax begonias treated as an annual, are a popular, low-maintenance bedding plants known for their glossy leaves (green or bronze) and continuous blooms in red, pink, or white, thriving in sun to part shade and tolerating heat and some drought. This group of annual begonias are several years old however. Fertilized every three months and have found a perfect spot in this garden for longevity.

I want to do this!!!

Purple Coral Bells in bloom. Not showy, but fancy and delicate. Require shade without any sun.

May is National Asparagus Month and this vegetable is worth celebrating! 🌱

Asparagus is one of the few perennial vegetables you can grow at home. Plant it once and it can produce spears every spring for 15 years or more. That's a long-term investment in your garden and your dinner plate.

A few things to know before you dig in:

Asparagus grows statewide in California with the right variety selection.
Start from crowns (the root system), not seeds. It's faster and more reliable.
Be patient. Skip harvesting the first year so the roots can get established. By year three, you can harvest for up to 10 weeks each spring.
After harvest, let the spears grow out into tall, feathery ferns. They feed the roots for next year's crop and look beautiful in the garden.

Ready to grow your own? UC Master Gardeners have everything you need to get started: ucanr.edu/program/uc-master-gardener-program/asparagus
