Yavapai College determined there were increased sodium levels in the reclaimed water from the City of Cottonwood, so it decided to drill a new well to irrigate its vineyard. There was an increase in the use of water softeners in Cottonwood homes, which makes the city’s reclaimed water salty. This is not good for the grapes that the college’s Viticulture and Enology Program studies.

Did you know that some of the weeds growing in your garden aren’t just pesky plants, they’re actually nature’s soil indicators? By observing which weeds thrive, you can learn a lot about your soil’s condition and what it might need.

Here’s a quick guide:

Daisy – Shows acidic or compacted soil
Ground Ivy – Loves damp, compacted soil
Dandelion – Grows in loose, compacted, alkaline, or low nitrogen soil
Stinging Nettle – Thrives in rich, compacted soil
Wild Mustard – Indicates low fertility and compacted soil
Clover – Prefers low nitrogen, poor soils
Hawkweed – Found in sandy, acidic soil
Garlic Mustard – Grows in compacted soil and shaded areas
Oxalis (Wood Sorrel) – Likes acidic soil and shade
Pigweed – Signals fertile, rich soil
Thistle – Appears in poor, compacted, acidic, or alkaline soils

Tip: Next time you see weeds in your garden, don’t just pull them out! Take a moment to observe, they might be telling you exactly what your soil needs. Adjusting soil pH, adding compost, or improving drainage could turn your garden into a thriving paradise.
