🏠💨 DID YOU KNOW? — HURRICANE CLIPS & STRAPS HELP CREATE A CONTINUOUS LOAD PATH

Your roof framing shouldn't simply sit on the top plate.

Properly selected and installed hurricane clips, straps, and structural connectors help transfer wind-uplift forces from the rafters or roof trusses into the wall system.

🔩 COMMON CONNECTIONS INCLUDE:

• Rafter/Truss → Wood Top Plate
Hurricane ties connect the roof framing to the wall framing.

• Truss → Masonry
Special straps and anchors can connect roof framing to reinforced masonry/bond-beam construction.

🌪️ WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

During high winds, the roof can experience significant uplift forces. The structural connections need to transfer those forces through the building instead of relying on toenails alone where the required uplift resistance exceeds the prescriptive connection capacity.

⚠️ DON'T SELECT A HURRICANE CLIP BY APPEARANCE ALONE.

The correct connector depends on:

✅ Required uplift/load resistance
✅ Rafter or truss configuration
✅ Wood or masonry construction
✅ Connector orientation
✅ Fastener type, diameter and length
✅ Number of required fasteners
✅ Manufacturer's allowable-load tables and installation instructions

Every required fastener hole matters. Substituting incorrect nails or screws can substantially reduce a connector's rated capacity.

📘 CODE REFERENCE

For residential construction, IRC Section R802.11 — Roof Tie-Down addresses uplift resistance and the connection of rafters and trusses to supporting wall assemblies.

Always follow the approved construction documents, engineered truss drawings, connector manufacturer's installation requirements, and applicable design loads.

💡 REMEMBER:

A hurricane clip is only one connection in the load path.
