The ground shook… and everyone ran.

A few days ago, I was sitting at my desk…
Then suddenly...
shouting. footsteps. doors slamming.

People running outside.
I ran too.
And you probably did the same too🙂.
..a 7.2 magnitude earthquake.

In moments like that, nothing else matters.

Not money. Not work.

Just one question:..“Is this building going to hold?”

But here’s what I want you to know...

Those small cracks you see in your house?
They look scary…but most of the time, they’re not the real danger. (block them if you could)

The real risk?
=>Poorly designed multi-storey buildings (3 floors and above).
=>Weak structural systems.
=>No proper earthquake design considered.

That’s where things can go wrong...FAST.

As an engineer, I know. Peace of mind is crucial for you.

Because when the next earthquake hits (and it will)…
You know your building is safe.

Ol families lo Santo…I’m sorry for the damage you’re facing right now. Stay strong 🙏

And if you’re planning to build, or already have concerns about your structure…
Get it checked and designed accordingly.

Be safe.

TLDR: Most lo residential haos oli safe taem ol big earthqake. Aos bai no fultaon. So, no wari.

🌪️ Why Do So Many Houses in Vanuatu Get Damaged During Cyclones?

After every severe cyclone, we hear the same explanation:
“Maybe the structure was weak.”
“Maybe the builder didn’t do it properly.”

But after years working in building design and engineering here in Vanuatu, I’ve learned something surprising:

Most of the time… it’s not the structure.
It’s the configuration of the house.

Let me explain in simple terms.

Imagine your house like a plastic bottle.

When the bottle is closed, you can squeeze it and it stays strong.
But the moment you open the cap, air rushes in and suddenly it’s much easier to crush.

A house behaves the same way during a cyclone.

When strong winds hit a home, they create pressure outside the building.

But if a window breaks or large openings allow wind to enter, the wind rushes inside.

Now the house is being pushed from the outside AND the inside at the same time.

The air inside the house starts pushing upward....like blowing air into a balloon.

That pressure creates suction on the roof, and suddenly the roof becomes the weakest point.

That’s why during cyclones we often see:
• Roofs ripped off
• Walls pushed outward
• Entire houses collapsing after a window fails

And once one opening fails, the damage spreads very quickly.

But here’s the good news.

There is a simple solution that most people overlook…
👉 Window shutters.

Think of shutters like a protective shield for your house’s pressure system.

When shutters are closed before a cyclone:

• Windows are protected from flying debris
• Wind cannot rush inside the house
• Internal pressure stays low
• The roof is far less likely to lift off

In simple terms:
No wind inside = less chance your roof flies away.

It’s a small feature that can make a huge difference during a Category 4 or 5 cyclone.

As someone who works in building design, this is something I believe more homes in Vanuatu should seriously consider.

Because better building isn’t always about more concrete or more steel. Sometimes it’s about adding simple shutters.

And when the next cyclone comes, the goal isn’t just to survive it.
It’s to come out of it with your home still standing. 🏠💪

Peace.

Owning a home in Port Vila is still possible.
But only if we stop believing the lie that “I need a loan first.”

I’ve designed countless homes around...
Right here in Vila — rain, sun, cyclones and all.

And I want to say this clearly:

👉 You do NOT need a bank loan to own a home.
👉 You do NOT need a big salary.
👉 You do NOT need to rush and put yourself in debt.

I’ve seen families on minimum wage build their homes — cash only — safely and step by step.

Here’s how they actually do it 👇

They don’t try to build a “perfect” house first.
They build a smart house first.

• Start small
• Build in stages
• Plan before they touch the ground
• Allocate budget effectively

Most people fail NOT because they don’t have money…
They fail because they build without a plan.

They copy someone else’s house.
They change their mind halfway.
They rebuild walls.
They waste materials.
They burn cash.

That’s not construction...that’s stress.

A home is not built in one big payment.
It’s built with clear steps.

Foundation today.
Room next year.
Extension when cash is ready.

No pressure.
No sleepless nights.
No bank calling you every month.

And the best part?

When you build with cash:
You stay in control
You sleep better (heck, tossing at 1AM isn't fun!)
You protect your family
You teach your children to build too...

With the right action steps, it's easy.

You CAN build a house with SMALL money!

I’ve seen it done.

Your future home doesn’t start with money.
It STARTS with a decision.

Peace!

Last week in town, something hit me hard.
Few old buildings have been demolished…
Dust settling, people passing by like it was nothing.

But for me?
I don’t know why... it messed with my mood😁
I felt dull, bored, almost… sad.
Couldn’t wait to get out of town that day.

And it got me thinking...maybe it wasn’t just the view or the mess.
Maybe it was the energy leaving with those buildings.

Because here’s what I believe 👇
Every building carries energy.
You can feel it the moment you walk in.

Think about it...

Walk into a school, and you can almost hear curiosity buzzing through the walls.

Step into a hospital, and you feel that quiet tension of hope and healing.

A shopping mall? That’s excitement, movement, impulse.

A nightclub? Pure chaos and thrill.

An office? Focus, ambition, maybe a little stress 😅

Each space shapes how we feel.
Buildings don’t just reflect people, they radiate the energy we put into them.

That’s why I believe a home is sacred.
It’s the one place where energy should calm, recharge, and inspire you.
It’s not just walls and a roof, it’s your personal energy field.

So next time you step into a building, pause for a second.
Ask yourself: How does this place make me feel?
Because the truth is… buildings are alive.
Just like us. 🏠✨ 🕺

Timber magic

I know, I know. Concrete sounds solid. But prone to earthquakes.

But the truth? Timber buildings are lighter, flexible, and shock-absorbent.

While a heavy concrete home might crack under pressure (literally), timber just goes, “Cool story bro,” and keeps standing.

Plus, let’s be real…

It’s faster to build ✅

Easier to repair ✅

Timber’s got your back (and your wallet) ✅

So if you're planning your first home in the islands… Go for timber, my friend.

Here's an example design below.

Build a 3-4 Bedroom (even on low salary)

Think you can’t afford to build? You can! Just be smart about it.

👉 Step 1: Land First, Fancy Later

Buying land is the biggest step. If you don’t have land yet, start looking at customary land options or affordable areas outside town.

Many people get stuck thinking they need a massive budget upfront, but even leasing customary land for a small fee can get you started.

👉 Step 2: Build in Stages (No Rush, No Stress)

Forget trying to build everything at once!
Start with the foundation and walls, live in a simple setup, then add on as money allows.

This is how a lot of families build in Vanuatu. Slow and steady wins the house.

👉 Step 3: Cut Labor Costs

If you have family or friends who can help, use sweat equity instead of hiring out everything.

Learn some DIY skills—you’d be surprised how much you can do yourself (YouTube is free, and so are uncles who like tusker).

👉 Step 4: Finance Wisely

Govt & bank home loan options (Yes, they exist)
VNPF housing loans (If you're a member)
Family land = no loan stress (If you can negotiate a piece)

💡 Real Talk: How Much Will It Cost?
A basic 3-bedroom home can be built for 1M -6M VT, depending on the size and needs. That’s cheaper than renting forever.

If you're building or renovating your home, choosing the right contractor is one of the MOST important decisions you'll make.

And in Vanuatu—where cyclones and earthquakes are a real threat you can’t afford to get it wrong.

Want to Build Your Dream Home? Here’s How to Choose the Right Architect!

So, you’ve bought your land, congratulations! 🎉
That’s a huge step toward building your dream home in Vanuatu.

But now comes the BIG question: Who will design it? 🤔

Picking the right architectural firm is one of the most important decisions you’ll make.

Get it right, and you’ll have a home that’s beautiful, functional, and built to last.

Get it wrong, and you could face budget blowouts, poor designs, or endless delays.

So, how do you choose the right architect…especially when you’re a hardworking 9-5er on an average salary?

Here’s what you need to look for:

1. Experience in Vanuatu’s Climate & Conditions

Vanuatu’s climate is subject to cyclones. Your architect must understand wind-resistant designs, flood risks, and proper ventilation to keep your home safe and comfortable.
Ask them:
✅ Have you designed homes that can withstand cyclones?
✅ Do you consider tropical climate factors like heat, humidity, and natural cooling?

2. Designs That Match Your Budget 💰

Not all architects understand that every dollar counts, but you do!
Some firms love to create “thousands-dollar” designs that are way beyond your means.
Find one who listens to YOU.

✅ Ask for previous projects within your budget range.
✅ Make sure they help you get the best materials for the best price.
✅ Check if they offer cost-effective design strategies (e.g., using natural light & airflow to reduce energy costs).

3. A Clear, Step-by-Step Process 📝

The last thing you want is confusion. A good architect will guide you through every step, from concept to council approvals and builder selection.

✅ Ask how they handle permits and compliance with Vanuatu’s building codes.
✅ Do they offer 3D designs so you can see your home before it’s built?
✅ Will they be involved during construction, or just hand over the plans and disappear?

4. Reviews & Recommendations 👥

Talk to real people who’ve worked with them before! Ask around, check Facebook groups, or visit finished projects.

✅ Look for testimonials from everyday families like yours.
✅ If possible, visit one of their completed homes and see the quality firsthand.

5. Communication & Trust 🤝

This is YOUR dream home. We’re talking about where you’ll raise your family, enjoy Sunday BBQs, and make lifelong memories.

You need an architect who:
✅ Listens to your ideas instead of forcing theirs.
✅ Keeps you updated so you’re never left in the dark.
✅ Respects your budget and timeline.

The Right Architect = A Stress-Free Build 🏠🚀

The truth is, your architect will make or break your home-building experience.

Choose wisely, and you’ll have a home that’s beautiful, durable, and perfectly suited to life in Vanuatu.

👉 If you know someone planning to build their home, tag them in the comments! Let’s help more people make smart choices and build homes they love. 💙
