Gary Sanitary District Weather & Service Update
As a result of today’s severe weather, the Gary Sanitary District (GSD) has experienced service disruptions.
Heavy rainfall has caused water levels in the Calumet River to rise, which may contribute to localized flooding and elevated water levels in low-lying areas.
Flood Safety Precautions
As a precaution, residents in areas prone to flooding are encouraged to:
Remove valuable belongings and important items from basements and other below-ground areas.
Avoid entering areas with standing or floodwater.
Monitor basement drains and plumbing during periods of heavy rainfall.
Remain alert to changing weather and flooding conditions.
Trash Collection Update
Tuesday’s trash collection routes will be completed on Wednesday, August 12.
GSD crews will work overtime to complete Tuesday’s remaining pickups while also servicing Wednesday’s regularly scheduled routes.
Residents whose trash has not been collected are asked to wait until after 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 12, before submitting a missed-pickup request through Gary 311 or the Gary Sanitary District’s website.
GSD crews will continue working throughout the recovery period to monitor conditions, address service disruptions, and maintain essential services throughout the city.
We appreciate the patience, cooperation, and understanding of Gary residents as we work together to respond to and recover from today’s severe weather.
Please continue to stay safe, remain alert, and follow official City of Gary updates.
