Before you start shopping, here's one thing worth knowing: insulation matters more than most people expect. An R-12 door keeps an attached Utah garage significantly warmer in January than a basic builder-grade door. The Department of Energy estimates that windows account for 25 to 30 percent of a home's heating and cooling loss. In Utah and Boise, where January mornings can hit single digits and summer afternoons push past 100°F, that number adds up fast on your energy bill.

Here's what actually makes a window energy efficient, and what doesn't:

U-factor under 0.27 is the ENERGY STAR baseline for Utah winters. Most older windows don't come close.

Solar heat gain (SHGC) matters just as much in St. George and Boise summers as U-factor does in winter.

If your windows are fogging between the panes, the argon fill is gone. They're performing like single-pane units regardless of their original rating.
