BIG 14 of 21: Spectral Acceleration Maps (SAM PH) Atlas under the Probabilistic Seismic Hazard and Risk Assessment Project
The Spectral Acceleration Maps of the Philippines (SAM PH) Atlas is the latest probabilistic seismic ground motion hazard maps developed and published by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS), in technical collaboration with the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) Foundation and Geoscience Australia (GA), and close consultation and coordination with the Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines (ASEP) ProjectSAM Committee.
The development of the Atlas was initiated and coordinated by the project proponents under the Probabilistic Seismic Hazard and Risk Assessment (PSHRA) of the Philippines project and was actively assisted and reviewed by DOST-PHIVOLCS’ technical working group (TWG) consisting of engineers, geologists, physicists, seismologists, and mathematicians, and was leveraged upon the joint technical paper collaboration of DOST-PHIVOLCS and GEM Foundation published in Earthquake Spectra, the publication Journal of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI).
Its objective is to assist civil and structural engineers and building designers in the seismic design calculation and assessment of existing and future essential, critical and high-risk structures and facilities in the Philippines, as requested by the ASEP leadership in February 2018, for adoption in the revision of the relevant seismic provision of the National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP) 8th edition in 2022.
