The project’s central idea was to reinterpret the existing slope as an inhabitable amphitheatre. Rather than reshaping the terrain, the design works with its natural topography, introducing a sequence of stone terraces, timber platforms, and integrated seating areas.

Every seating position is carefully oriented towards the panoramic view, making observation the project’s primary spatial experience. The intervention unfolds gradually across the landscape, creating a continuous dialogue between movement, gathering, and contemplation.

A restrained palette of natural stone, timber, and Mediterranean planting reinforces the connection to the site, allowing the architecture to emerge as a seamless extension of the surrounding landscape.

Architecture is conceived as a continuation of the landscape rather than an autonomous form.

Transitional spaces, materiality, and planting reinterpret the principles that have historically shaped Cretan dwelling: shade, collectivity, economy of means, and a deep connection to place.

Each detail becomes part of a wider spatial narrative, allowing contemporary life to emerge as a natural continuation of the site’s cultural and environmental memory.

The project explores contemporary dwelling through the principles of Cretan settlement formation and the organic evolution of vernacular architecture.

The composition is conceived as a small residential cluster for an extended family, drawing upon the organic growth of the Cretan house and the morphological logic of the village. Rather than adopting a singular and predetermined form, the project embraces a gradual process of spatial aggregation. As in traditional Cretan dwellings, built form is understood as the outcome of necessity, transformation, and collective life, where each addition becomes a natural continuation of an existing whole.

Its morphological language derives from the spatial structure of Gerani, from the proportions and relationships between volumes, and from the ways in which habitation is integrated into topography and landscape.

A fundamental aspect of the proposal was the careful reading of the site’s natural terrain and the minimization of interventions to the existing topography. Outdoor spaces are organized as a sequence of private and collective extensions, allowing for the autonomy of each residence while simultaneously fostering family cohesion and shared everyday experiences.

Planting was approached as an integral component of the architectural strategy rather than a secondary layer. Existing olive trees were preserved, while new interventions rely exclusively on endemic Cretan vegetation and aromatic herbs, reinforcing the continuity of the local ecosystem and allowing the project to become part of the landscape rather than an imposition upon it.

The development consists of three three-bedroom residences and three two-bedroom residences, proposing a contemporary model of family living grounded in proximity, autonomy, and community.

Locality precedes form.
It is not an aesthetic choice, but the outcome of a continuous relationship between landscape, infrastructure, people, and culture.

Needs shape infrastructure.
The architecture of everyday life was never a matter of form, but of resourcefulness, climate, and survival.

The landscape gives rise to needs.
Distances, geography, climate, and the changing seasons have always shaped the ways in which life is inhabited and lived.

Villages were not designed as objects.
They emerged from a deep understanding of landscape, climate, available resources, and the rhythms of collective life.

The landscape gives rise to needs.
Needs shape infrastructure.
Infrastructure determines the ways in which places are inhabited.
Ways of inhabiting give rise to culture.
And culture, in turn, leaves its imprint upon the landscape.

The Cretan house was never conceived as a finished object.
It grew organically, responding to the changing needs of family life. Each new necessity gave rise to another room, another volume, another layer of inhabitation. Form was not imposed; it emerged through life itself.
