Something I’ve noticed

Do you find yourself saying this in your head?

You’re not the only one, but it’s also not entirely true

Teaching art to families makes it very clear that creativity is learned, not born, and adults have the advantage of better depth perception and motor skills than kids do!

The real difference I see is the expectation of the artist going into the artwork

If you’re an adult who’s abandoned drawing because you say “I’m just not artistic”
Let me challenge that with my lessons and see if you’re not drawing more and better than you were last week :)

I think there’s 3 main types of art:
- Play
- Practice
- Performance

I find that creative frustration comes from mixing them up with each other.

Play is for you to experiment and enjoy the making, no matter the outcome.

Practice is for pushing yourself in new skills and techniques, and experiment with your ability. The point here isn’t actually to have fun, but to improve and feel accomplished. Practice helps you get the results you want.

Performance is the crossover of the two: confident skills that make it enjoyable to create and display your ability for others to enjoy.

This is the ONLY kind of art making that is inherently meant for others to share in it, to rejoice and celebrate your achievements by consuming the art you make. Performance is for you to show off your creative ability with others and delight in it.

When you create with intention, you can make art more freely than if you are always forcing yourself to perform. Without practice, you won’t improve; without play, you won’t enjoy.

All are important;
all are art;
all of them have different purposes.

When I teach, I make sure my students get opportunities to practice all three.
