Final visualisations for project in Durbanville, a new mixed use development

A contemporary multi-use development designed for the growing Durbanville district; integrating retail, office space, and residential living into one cohesive urban experience.

The architectural language balances warmth and modernity through layered materiality, refined proportions, and active ground-floor engagement. Designed to contribute to the future character of Durbanville while creating spaces that feel connected, functional, and human-scaled.

From concept sketches to final renders; this project explored how mixed-use architecture can shape vibrant community-focused environments.

SEEDLING PODS

Nestled within the Serra da Estrela mountains, these self-sustainable retreat pods are inspired by the lifecycle of the maritime pine seed — designed to reconnect people with nature through architecture.

From panoramic valley views to adaptable indoor-outdoor living, the project explores biomimicry, regeneration, and immersive wellness spaces for the Vale de Moses Yoga Retreat. Built using prefabricated timber systems and agro-waste insulation, the pods celebrate sustainable design rooted in the surrounding landscape.

A sanctuary beneath the canopy where architecture and nature exist as one.

Process for Durbanville Mixed Use Development
A look into the design process behind Durbanville, a multi-use development envisioned for the evolving Durbanville district.

The project brings together retail at street level, with offices and residences layered above to create an active urban edge that responds to both community and city growth.

This process focused on testing massing, façade rhythm, and various material palettes to shape a contemporary yet grounded architectural identity. From hand sketches to atmospheric renders, each iteration pushed the project closer to its final vision.

Behind the Scenes: Groot Parys Lifestyle Estate

Currently under construction, Groot Parys Lifestyle Estate in Paarl continues to take shape through a careful balance of technical precision and architectural intent.

This clerestory detail highlights the layered thinking behind the design; bringing natural light deep into the interiors while framing the surrounding Winelands landscape. Paired with behind-the-scenes moments from site, the process reveals how drawings, materials, and craftsmanship come together to shape spaces rooted in simplicity, warmth, and place.

Set within the historic Paarl Valley, the award-winning estate embraces a contemporary Cape Karoo architectural language inspired by sustainability, light, and timeless countryside living.

Last Nuclear Bomb Memorial Competition

BPAS Architects participated in an international competition to design the Last Nuclear Bomb Memorial at Vastrapveld: South Africa’s abandoned nuclear testing site hidden within the Great Karoo.

The proposal transforms the site into an architectural journey through South Africa’s nuclear history: guiding visitors through spaces of discovery, reflection, and remembrance. Walkways descend toward the concealed bomb shaft below, while a cylinder of light cuts through the concrete slab above; symbolically revealing what was once hidden and shining a light on a history that should never be repeated.

Designed to reflect the devastating impact of what could have been, the memorial simultaneously seeks to leave the surrounding landscape as untouched as possible.

One of the most underestimated parts of any project is the time spent before design work formally begins.

There is often pressure at the outset to move quickly, to start drawing, issue information and create immediate momentum. But in practice, the projects that progress most efficiently are usually the ones where more time was taken early on to resolve the brief and align decision-making.

We’ve seen how premature decisions can lead to avoidable revisions later in the process, particularly once construction is underway. On the other hand, when the groundwork is done at the beginning, delivery tends to be far smoother.
In architecture, taking time upfront is rarely wasted time.

Education is fundamental to the growth and success of any country and its future generations. Equally important is the willingness to embrace technology and evolving approaches to learning. The way we educate must continuously adapt to prepare students for what lies ahead.

BPAS has recently developed an Innovation Centre, designed to integrate current technologies while creating a space to explore the future of learning. This environment is intended to act as a catalyst for emerging subjects, much like coding and robotics did a few years ago.

Without revealing too much, this Innovation Centre has the potential to become a birthplace for the next wave of technological breakthroughs. Watch this space.

Serving looks and smashing volleys! 🎾💥

We traded the drawing boards for the Padel courts last Friday at Padel Story Oakdale. From epic rallies to a few questionable serves, our team building afternoon was a total "smash."

It’s not just about building structures; it’s about building the team that makes it all happen! Swipe left to see some of our best action shots (and the post-game smiles). 📸👇

Introducing “Die Nuwe Braak”

A new vision for Die Braak: reimagined as a refined destination for tourists and contemporary artists in Stellenbosch.

At the heart of the proposal is the relocation of the Cape Wheel from V&A Waterfront to Die Braak; introducing a striking new landmark and elevated visitor experience within the town centre.

The proposal includes:
- The Cape Wheel as a new focal point
- A curated Lifestyle Market with premium retail and dining
- A contemporary Sculpture Park for bold, modern, large-scale artworks

By reprogramming portions of the site, the proposal prioritises activation, cultural relevance, and economic performance; ensuring the space draws wider audiences, and contributes meaningfully to the town’s newfound heritage and future.

This is not about preserving the status quo. It’s about positioning Stellenbosch on a global stage; embracing a more curated, aspirational identity that resonates with both tourists and the international art community. A step toward a more globally relevant, experience-driven Stellenbosch. Details to follow
