Opt for a white kitchen - If you’re thinking long-term, nothing beats a white kitchen. It may not seem very original at first, but it’s one colour that defies trends, ages well, looks clean and is easy to accessorise. Styles and finishes vary greatly, so there is a white kitchen for pretty much anyone.

Kitchen work zones:

We know all about the trusted, traditional work triangle but there are other effective ways to lay out your kitchen which are becoming more and more popular. It’s a big word in the world of kitchens at the moment – WORK ZONES. This way of laying out a kitchen is especially useful for bigger kitchens and kitchens where there is more than one cook at work at a time.

What’s the big idea?

The core idea is to group appliances and items according to the task they’re used for. So, imagine in your kitchen, a place for the kettle, teaspoons, sugar, coffee and mugs. Then the same for food preparation, cleaning, cooking and food storage.

Good Morning. Wow what a year so far!!!! The first 3 months nothing happened and then suddenly work started streaming in. Thank you to every client!
When a potential client asks what is our price range, I can't really answer you. We do not work our cupboards out before the time and also not per meter. Every job is unique. The carcasses' price stays the same but now you change the wood and you want glass shelves and glass doors. You want very expensive handles and o yes... granite tops. We need to keep all this in consideration when working out your quote. So... contact us and we come out to you and we draw up a plan specifically for you. We do not have standard size cupboards and a lot of fillers to cover up huge spaces that could have been utilized as maybe a spice cupboard or a tray cupboard. Contact Derick at 083 381 4148.

How to create perfect kitchen lighting
By Sally Storey, 25 Apr 2013

1 Forget grids of downlights; use light only where it is required. Work surfaces need good task lighting, whether it is from downlights or pendants. As well as adding impact and visual interest, a row of pendants over an island will help provide a visual divide between the dining and kitchen areas.

2 Under-cupboard lighting is usually best for task lighting because it is well hidden and stops your shadow obscuring the worktop. The latest LED products have less heat output, which saves money and prevents cupboards and food becoming too warm. Using a continuous Contour LED strip or individual fittings of only two watts is an easy way to create practical and attractive lighting.

3 Think creatively about where you put your light sources. For example, incorporating lighting below an island unit will make it appear to float. In kitchens with high ceilings, try adding uplights to the tops of cabinets. It adds general light to the space so you will need fewer downlights.

4 Layer the light. I’ve mentioned general and task lighting, but also add some accent and ambient lighting. Using a number of different sources lends a more ‘three-dimensional’ feel and so helps you create the mood you want. Each source should be controlled individually so that the scheme can create anything from the feeling of bright daylight to an intimate atmosphere over dinner.

5 The latest developments of LEDs means the most recent downlights are only eight or 10W rather than 50W. A large kitchen with 14 downlights and under-cupboard lighting can now be lit with only 200 watts. Be sure to check the packaging for a colour temperature of around 2,700 Kelvin and a CRI (Colour Rendition Index) over 90 to ensure you end up with a warm, attractive light.

6 If your kitchen or dining area is small, you can increase the sense of space by using directional spotlights angled towards the cupboards and walls. The light is reflected back into the room and is much more effective than shining the light straight down at the floor.

7 Try to ensure that lights fitted near hobs fit flush to the wall or ceiling – making them easy to wipe clean. Using fittings with a covered glass is ideal.

8 If using track lights, the key is to position the track so that spotlights never shine in your eye. Too often the track is located in the centre of a kitchen, meaning a central island may be lit effectively but people sitting to one side are in danger of being either in shadow or full glare.

9 Spots should be placed where you need the light. Selecting directional versions gives added flexibility. For example, lights over a kitchen counter often work best placed above the edges of the counter, but angled across it to create glare-free lighting.

10 With glass cabinets, I prefer to light them internally. They become almost like wall lights, so make sure you don’t mind people seeing what you have inside them.

Regulations about gas installations home-owners should know

Press • Oct 27, 2015
The rapidly increasing cost of electricity has resulted in a growth in popularity among many South African home-owners to utilise gas installations in their homes. However, most homeowners are unaware that there are specific regulations that they must comply with when installing gas equipment in their homes to ensure their insurance policy remains valid.
According to the regulations that were introduced in 2009, all gas installations must have a Certificate of Conformity according to the Pressure Equipment Regulations that have been promulgated under the Occupation Health and Safety Act (No 85 of 1993).
While this may sound like a complex, legal document – essentially it is a certificate that states that the installation has been properly inspected and is determined to be safe and leak free. It is critical that this certificate is also issued by an authorised person who is registered with the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Safety Association of Southern Africa (LPGAS).
According to the regulation, any home-owner who has a liquid gas installation installed in their home must have this certificate, which is usually obtained during the installation phase. However, all home-owners considering gas installations need to know that the onus is on them, the homeowner, to ensure that they have this certificate in their possession, not the installer.
If your home is damaged or destroyed, as a result of a defective gas appliance – and you do not have a valid certificate issued by someone registered with LPGAS – the insurance implications could be significant. An insurance company would be well within their rights to repudiate a claim, which could have severe financial repercussions for the home-owner.
To make sure that your installation is up to standard, contact us so that we can check it for you and install it correctly, if necessary.

The rapidly increasing cost of electricity has resulted in a growth in popularity among many South African home-owners to utilise gas installations in their homes. An insurance company would be well within their rights to repudiate a claim, which could have severe financial repercussions for the home-owner.
Having the installation inspected and approved is a quick and easy process – provided the installation has been done correctly – much in line with similar requirements for electrical installations, which also requires a certificate of compliance under the Machinery and Occupational Safety Act of 1983.
The types of gas installations that require this certificate include gas fires or braais, gas stoves and ovens, as well as hot water systems. It is vital for all home-owners to realise that such an inspection is not just essential for their insurance policy to remain valid, but even more importantly, that it is conducted to ensure that the installation is safe and their family is not put at risk. If a gas appliance has been incorrectly installed and results in a gas leak this could have major health implications for a family, not to mention the huge danger involved of an explosion.
It is also important for homeowners to know that if they wish to sell their home and they have a gas appliance installed, they are required to obtain the certificate and deliver a copy thereof to the new purchaser.
LPGAS provides the following useful tips regarding gas safety:
• Always use a registered installer
• Always use a qualified gas dealer
• Always use a verified and tested gas product
• Always check the seal on a cylinder matches the brand of the cylinder
• Always check gas appliances before use
If you suspect your gas appliance is unsafe it is best to turn the appliance off immediately and do not touch it until it has been checked by a registered gas engineer. Open all the doors and windows to air out the room and ensure you have shut off the gas supply at the meter control valve. To ensure your gas installations are always in top working order ask a registered gas installer to perform an annual maintenance and service check.
For all homeowners with gas installations already installed on their property or if for those planning on doing so in the future it is vital to ensure compliance with all the above regulations not only to ensure you adhere to stipulations within your home owners insurance policy but to also make sure you and your precious family are safe from any gas related disasters.

INTERESTING THINGS IN YOUR KITCHEN.

I just read a new article on the HOUZZ webpage about paper towel dispensers. There are a few criticisms about going green and not use paper towels but rather rags. There is even a few that said ‘why a whole article about a paper towel dispensers’.
I think there is a place for both paper towels and rags. I particularly, do not have a proper place where to put the paper towel roll. Wouldn’t it be nice to incorporate a dispenser into your kitchen design? You already think its normal to have a spice drawer and tray cupboard.. then why not also a towel dispenser? I think it’s a great idea!

These days we trend is to install a Green waste disposal system in your kitchen (a bin for glass and one for paper) and you then do not install a dispensing hole on your counter top. I would then install a drawer above my disposal bin cupboard. On the front of the drawer you can have your towel dispenser and in the drawer you can save you extra roll of paper towels and even extra dish cloths.
