MOTHER ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED CHILD NEGLECT CONCERNING UNWASHED SCHOOL UNIFORM
A mother of three was arrested for alleged child neglect after a six-year-old child failed to attend school due to an unwashed uniform and was found in a tavern.
According to Police, Ms. M. Gelderblom, a social worker at Free State Care in Action in Zastron, was informed by a Child and Youth Care Worker, Mr. T. Mmutsi, that a six-year-old boy did not attend school because his mother failed to wash his school clothes. The child was found in the street and stated that his mother sent him to the shop to buy mealie-meal.
Ms. Gelderblom reported that the complainant went to Stop 2 Tavern in Itumeleng and found the child’s mother at the tavern, who seemed to be under the influence of alcohol and was accompanied by her five-year-old child. The five-year-old was observed to be dirty and appeared to be inadequately cared for. Ms. Gelderblom further alleged that both children seemed to be hungry.
Additionally, the suspect has a 14-year-old child who frequently fails to attend school due to alleged neglect within their home.
Ms. Gelderblom confirmed that the family received support from social workers from June 2025 until December 2025 to address concerns. However, the suspect declined to attend treatment for alcohol abuse. The children were also reported to have been left without food while their mother was under the influence of alcohol. A case of alleged child neglect, which will involve the relevant government department, was registered.
The suspect will appear in Zastron Magistrate’s Court on a charge of alleged child neglect.

FUEL PRICES SET FOR SHARP INCREASE FROM WEDNESDAY

SOUTH AFRICA – Motorists are set for another blow at the pumps, with fuel prices expected to increase sharply from Wednesday, 2 September 2026.

Both 93 and 95 unleaded petrol will increase by R1.34 per litre, while diesel users face a bigger jump, with increases of up to R3.15 per litre.

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources confirmed that diesel prices will rise by around R2.94 per litre (0.05% sulphur) and R3.15 per litre (0.005% sulphur).

The increases have been linked to higher international oil prices, global supply pressures and other adjustments affecting fuel pricing.

The latest fuel hike is expected to place further pressure on motorists, businesses and consumers as transport costs are likely to be affected.
