Blockbuster Drain Cleaning & Plumbing

Blockbuster Drain Cleaning & Plumbing Specialist drain cleaning and repair, plumbers. We specialise in high tech drain cleaning and repair, but also do general maintenance plumbing.

The unique (in SA) product that we offer is the use of small bore (110mm) HDPE sewer pipe re-lining. We can provide this service using an exceptionally compact machine (that can be wheeled into the back yard) and the cost of this re-lining compares with traditional "dig and replace" methods. Our equipment has been developed and made as a joint venture between myself and Graham Rogers of "The Drain

Corporation". We have been perfecting this system over a period of 8 years and we now routinly pull liners under buildings roads, paving, swimming pools etc.

PHONE NUMBER CHANGE! ๐Ÿ˜ก I've thrown in the towel with MTN after 30+ years. They have the most spectacularly useless support on Earth. Possibly way beyond earth. So my NEW number is 065 220 7525 for both direct calls and WhatsApp although you can still use the old number for WhatsApp if that's more convenient. ๐Ÿ“ž

Since my last post a customer pointed out that you often don't have access to the downstream side to bring the water in from downstream. So he needed something that would cope with both.

So off to lathe and here it is ๐Ÿ˜œ You simply turn it around depending on where you need to feed the water from.

It's not co-axial like the other one but if you have already stirred the plug with a 75mm corkscrew this should go through. We'll try it and let you know ๐Ÿคฃ

For Plumbers. If part of this doesn't look familiar then you probably don't need it ๐Ÿ˜œ

It's used with 8mm steel drain rods to inject water into seriously PLUGGED sewers. Your drain rods pass through but nothing happens ๐Ÿคฃ You simply attach the conex end to a length of pipe connected to a water supply.

You draw the rods out slowly and feed in the plastic pipe. The water emulsifies the plug and it clears itself.

I don't believe it's commercially available but if you need one contact me via WhatsApp 083 458 4836. Or email [email protected] ๐Ÿ˜œ

Rumour has it that the temperature in GP is going down to -4 degrees C next week - on Tuesday! So this is an interesting number : minus 4 degrees. Our experience in GP over the last 20 years is that copper pipes freeze (overnight) when the night temperature dips to -3 and beyond. This used to bring a stream of work the next day that we were unable to cope with. But over the last 5+ years nothing. Maybe one or two. But it simply doesn't get that cold anymore.

So this, if it's accurate, is going to create problems for everyone with vulnerable copper pipes - in the roofspace - particularly if the living space is insulated (pink and isotherm) or pipes outside. Even pastic ones.

THERE IS AN EASY FIX HOWEVER! Before you go to bed allow all your taps to DRIP! Briskly. Even if you "waste" 20 or 100l I promise you it's going to be worth it. Moving water doen't freeze :-)

Why am I telling you this? Because I am still going to be busy on Tuesday, Wedesday and Thursday with those who didnt get the message :-)

Tank water storage is becoming very popular in recent days.

Here some general info on these systems based on recent installations.

1. The tanks come in a variety of sizes from 500 to 5000l. Your choice depends on your budget and the space available.

2. Tanks in the suburbs should generally stay on the ground. Elevated tanks add huge cost and complexity to the installation. You don't need a slab. Compacted river sand base is good enough.

3. A 750w pump is generally more than adequate for a domestic application. Remember that you need electricity from Eskom to run it if you're still on grid.

You must add the cost of the electrical supply to the pump in your budget. It can affect your CoC.

4. There are a number of configurations available. Primarily, full time out the tank via a pump to the various water points. This assures uninterrupted supply and constant pressure. This also consumes the most electricity tho.

The other way is to only use the water in the tank as backup. This can be problematic because the water standing in the tank can go "stale". But you only switch the pump on when you have no municipal water. This system requires manual intervention and management and we don't recommend this for drinking water for the reason already given.

5. The pump is going to probably provide more pressure than the municipality can. This can lead to failures of marginal piping in the house. Like flex pipes. This needs to be watched with marginal or old existing piping. Fitting a pressure control valve can mitigate this.

Our most recent project. 20m of sewer line replaced in Edenvale under a house and outbuilding. One day of preparation 60 minutes to pull the pipe into position and 1.5 days to fill and tidy up excavation and paving.

This method involves the replacement of degraded "Sandtar" pipes with class 16 HDPE plastic pipe. The new plastic pipe is pulled through the old pipe by means of a hydraulic winch. The old pipe is "burst" outwards by a forcing cone and the new pipe follows behind.

This method negates trenches. A hole is required at the start to provide a launch for the new pipe and we often pull from the existing manhole. An excavation is required at each lateral connection however.

If there happens to be a house built over the failed sewer pipe then this is the only way to do it - short of digging a ditch through the house or rerouting the line which is often impractical or impossible.

This is particularly relevant to those in Atlasville and Alphen Park.

This is a likely cause of ongoing drama with your sewer/drains.

Itโ€™s called โ€œSantarโ€ pipe and has a lifespan of 35-40 years

Call me on 0834584836 for a really smart way of replacing this pipe ๐Ÿ˜œ

Sewer/drain issues in Atlasville.

This is an unashamed promo but the contents are factual. Anyone can fix the problem but we have a system that nobody else uses ๐Ÿ˜œ

The problem in Atlasville- boils down to the fact that in the early to mid eighties the builders used a specific type of sewer pipe material called โ€œSandtarโ€. This was a fiber pitch material with a lifespan of around 35-40 years.

What happens is the material ultimately starts to recycle itself. It disintegrates as the pitch decays and starts to behave very much like wet chipboard. The pipe collapses and roots get into the joints. This causes the sewer to block and from thereon the problemsare ongoing.

Youโ€™re not alone - the whole of Alphen Park, Crystal park and parts of farramere have the same problem.

So if youโ€™re having constant problems with your sewer/drain you need to get on top of this. Speak to your plumber about Santar pipe. If heโ€™s not familiar with it find another plumber who is.

Unfortunately with Santar pipe the entire line needs to replaced - not just a minor section as is the case with earthenware (clay) and PVC.

Give BLOCKBUSTER a call for a quote on our trenchless replacement. Our prices compare favorably with conventional methods and we can replace up to 80m in 3 days ๐Ÿ˜œ Lee at 0834584836.
