CREATE A BEE FRIENDLY GARDEN … WE NEED BEES !

🐝 Many of our food crops are dependant on bees for the pollination of flowers. Only after successfull pollination of flowers can fruits start developing. Without these small pollinators our food recourses will decline rapidly.

🐝 Bee populations are drastically declining due to urbanisation (destroying the food reserves
of bees), global warming as well as though the increased use of chemicals like insecticides.

🐝 Maintain good bee populations through clever gardening by planting bee attracting plants. Keep these plants away from kids play areas and teach your childen to respect bees.

🐝 Bees fly further in search of food and water that most of us drive to a supermarket. Bees love sunny spaces that are filled with flowers. Do not forget to add drinking spots for bees to drink water at.

🐝 Plant masses of the same type of flowers as bees will continue to feed on one type of flowering plant (e.g. Lavender) until the reserves are depleted from all these plants before moving on to another type of plant.

🐝 Plant flowering plants of varying heights - think of a variety of flowering trees, shrubs, perennials, ground covers.

🐝 Remember to add a variety of flowers of varying shapes, sizes and colours.

🐝 Add flowering plants to your garden that will bloom throughout the year … especially pollen and nectar rich plants.

🐝 Ensure that bees can feed on flowering plants from early spring (when bees start feeding their newbornes) to late autumn (when bees start building up reserves to carry them through winter).

🐝 Reduce the use of chemical systemic insecticides as the impact of poisons can have a devastating effect on bee populations. Rather opt for a organic and environmentally friendly ways of combatting pests in the garden.

🐝 Plants need bees … and so do we.
