After a long quiet season, I thought it was time to reintroduce myself.
Hi, I’m Erika, the face behind Zaaivrouw.
Many of you first found me during an unexpected chapter of life. After returning home to South Africa following five years living and working in Bermuda, I was pregnant with our second child and searching for a creative outlet that could also help generate an income from home. That’s where Zaaivrouw began.
What started with handmade felt toys, crochet earrings and a love for making things slowly grew into sharing more renovation projects, interior design work and building a small client base of my own.
Life, however, has a way of changing shape.
In 2022 I stepped into a new role teaching design at a tertiary college and in 2023 joined an Architects firm working full-time as an Interior Architect, and somewhere between projects, lectures, deadlines and raising three young children, social media quietly moved to the bottom of the list.
But Zaaivrouw has never really gone away.
The name itself is rooted in family history, inspired by my great-grandmother’s maiden name, Zaaiman. “Zaai” means to sow, plant and nurture growth, which feels more meaningful now than ever before. The vision for this page is to sow bits of creativity into the world as reflected in my life as a professional, a mother, a wife, sister, friend and to enjoy all the unexpected ways that design presents itself.
So this page is evolving once again.
Going forward, you can expect a little more of the real story behind the spaces:
• Interior architecture and design insights
• Renovation projects and practical design advice
• DIY experiments, building and making things by hand
• Inspired ideas brought to life
• Family home projects and everyday creativity
• A glimpse into balancing design, motherhood and finding my way back to a healthier and more intentional life
Thank you for being here, even through the quiet seasons.
I’m looking forward to creating, sharing and growing again.
