Sir Lowry’s Pass Truck Arrestor Bed

Completed in August 2018, the R11 million truck arrestor bed and 850m slipway at the bottom of Sir Lowry’s Pass on the N2 is an important piece of road safety infrastructure.

Built for the Western Cape Government, the facility provides a safe run-off area for heavy vehicles experiencing brake failure while descending the pass.

Upgrading the Kathu Waste Water Treatment Works

A key infrastructure project delivered for Gamagara Municipality in Kathu, Northern Cape, focused on increasing the capacity of the existing Waste Water Treatment Works.

The R34.5 million project included the construction of reinforced concrete structures, biological reactors, secondary settling tanks, sludge drying beds, pump stations, interconnecting pipework, building works and site upgrades.

The project was completed in October 2013 over a 12-month period, with Worley Parsons serving as the engineer.

One of the key challenges was groundwater during the excavation of the supernatant pump station, which reached 3.7m below natural ground level. A well-point dewatering system was successfully implemented, allowing construction to continue safely and efficiently.

The project also achieved its local labour requirements, with knowledge transfer and community participation remaining a key focus throughout.
