Asbestos is a hazardous mineral that was widely used in construction materials in the 20th century. Although its use has been banned in many countries, many buildings constructed before the ban still contain asbestos-containing materials (ACMs). If these materials become damaged, they can release asbestos fibers into the air, which can cause respiratory illnesses.

Asbestos encapsulation is a cost-effective and safe way to manage ACMs and is an option as per South Africa's Department of Employment and Labour Asbestos Abatement Regulations dated 10 November 2020.

It involves applying a sealant or coating to ACMs to prevent the release of fibers. This method reduces the risk of exposure to asbestos fibers, extends the lifespan of ACMs, and helps building owners comply with regulations. It can be done with minimal disruption to daily activities and is environmentally friendly as it avoids the need for asbestos removal, which generates waste and requires energy-intensive equipment.
