Worth thinking about early if you're planning a staircase: the balustrade decides how big the room feels.

A solid balustrade does the safety job perfectly well. It also cuts the space in half visually and blocks whatever light was coming down the stairwell, which matters a lot in an open-plan ground floor where the stairs sit in the middle of everything.

Glass does the same job and keeps the sightline. This one is side-mounted toughened glass fixed into the stringer, so there's no top rail and no posts breaking up the run. The LED strip under the treads only reads the way it does because there's nothing standing in front of it.

One part of this isn't a style decision. Toughened glass is not optional on a balustrade. It is a barrier holding people back, often at height, so the glass has to be rated for it and so do the fixings. If anyone quotes you standard float glass for a balustrade, that is the moment to ask questions.

If you're at the stage of choosing a staircase, this is a cheaper decision to make now than to revisit later.

FAQ — how do you look after frameless glass?

The good news: not much. Three small habits keep it looking like the day it went in.

Rinse the glass after each shower — a quick spray-down washes off the soap and body wash residue before it has a chance to bond to the surface. Squeegee it once a week. Thirty seconds and you've prevented the water-spotting and mineral build-up that ages frameless glass badly.

And steer clear of bleach, ammonia, and abrasive scrubbers. Harsh chemicals damage the protective coating some frameless panels have, and abrasive pads scratch the glass. Warm water with a bit of white vinegar handles ninety per cent of what most bathrooms need.

That's it. No specialist products, no complicated routine — just a quick rinse and a squeegee and it'll outlast most bathroom fittings around it.

Another angle of the arched mirror we installed in Langebaan with Bay Jay Construction. The warm LED behind it is what makes the glazed tile detail read the way it does — mirrors like this always look better in the room they were designed for than they do in a workshop.
Three mirror jobs finished recently, from three very different rooms.

Silver mirrors fitted to sliding cupboard doors for a private client — floor to ceiling, so the mirror does the double job of hiding the storage and doubling the sense of space in the room.

And a warm-white LED floating mirror in Green Point. Custom size, custom brackets, backlit so it sits proud of the wall.

Three different jobs, one thing in common — a mirror is only as good as what's around it. Getting the size, the lighting, and the placement right is where the difference is.

In the fab shop this week: a run of custom white aluminium shower cubicle dividers for the Wynberg Boys change rooms.

Custom aluminium is the right spec for a job like this. It doesn't rust, holds up to the daily wear of a school setting, and the white powder-coat finish keeps a change room looking brighter than the old steel setups you tend to find in older facilities. Every divider is fabricated to fit the run properly, so there's no gap-filling or awkward joins at install.

Fitted clear safety vinyl to a bank of sea-facing windows in Sea Point this week, working with Elevate BnB.

Clear vinyl is the underrated one. It's a transparent film that bonds to the existing glass and turns a standard pane into laminated safety glass — if it ever breaks, the fragments stick to the film instead of hitting the floor. Same principle as PVB safety glass, applied to what you already have.

The advantages: no need to rip out and replace, no fabrication lead time, and the finish stays clear. You keep your view, you keep your existing windows, and you upgrade the safety rating in a single visit.

It's a good option for apartment blocks, holiday lets, and any street-level or high-traffic glazing where a full pane replacement doesn't make sense.

Callout recently to Craft Soda Company — arrived to a shattered front door, aluminium frame still sound underneath.

The good news for any business owner in this situation: a broken commercial front door is almost always a glass problem, not a frame problem. Which means the fix is a lot cheaper and quicker than most people expect. We replaced the panes with clear PVB safety glass, so if it takes another knock the fragments will hold together rather than fall out onto the pavement, and they were trading again the same day.

Winter is peak season for calls like this. If your business front is glazed and you need it sorted fast, that’s what we do.

A recent job: a large viewing window in a stone-clad Cape home, one pane cracked and replaced with clear PVB safety glass.

Big single panes at ground level do two jobs — they show off the view, and they take the impact when something or someone hits them. Which is why PVB is what we always spec for glazing like this.

PVB is short for polyvinyl butyral. Two panes of glass bonded together with a tough plastic interlayer between them. Under impact, the glass may crack, but the fragments stay stuck to the interlayer rather than scattering across the floor. It's safer for anyone nearby, and considerably less mess to clean up.

If you have a viewing window, a low-level pane, or a door with standard glass in it — worth checking whether it should be safety glass. Give us a shout if you're not sure.
