New Zealand maintains strict biosecurity requirements for vessels arriving in its waters.

Under MPI’s Craft Risk Management Standard, vessels must be able to provide evidence of how biofouling has been managed before arrival. The exact requirement depends on the vessel’s intended stay and itinerary.

For most short-stay commercial vessels, documented continual hull maintenance using best practices may satisfy the requirement. Long-stay vessels generally need evidence that the hull and niche areas have been inspected and, where necessary, cleaned within 30 days before arrival.

Why are hydraulic and fluid conveyance systems critical to reliable offshore operations?

Hydraulic systems power much of the equipment used during offshore inspection, intervention and maintenance.

Reliability depends not only on working pressure, but on selecting the correct hose, fittings and assembly for the full operating environment.

Two-wire braided and four-wire spiral hoses can operate at similar nominal pressures, but they are designed for different duty requirements. Selection should consider pressure surges and impulse loading, flow, temperature, fluid compatibility, bend radius, routing, abrasion, movement, service life and applicable approvals.

More reinforcement does not automatically mean a better hose. Four-wire spiral hose is generally suited to more demanding high-pressure, high-impulse applications, while a correctly specified two-wire braided hose can provide excellent reliability in the right application.

Aeroquip® by Danfoss hoses and compatible fittings are developed and tested as complete systems, with defined pressure, temperature, bend-radius, abrasion and impulse-life specifications. Selected qualified hose-and-fitting combinations also carry recognised classification approvals, including ABS and DNV, subject to the specific product and assembly requirements.

Which vessels benefit most from OPL services?

My vessel has been waiting at anchorage for two weeks. Should I be concerned about hull fouling?

A prolonged anchorage stay does not automatically mean that hull cleaning is required — but it does mean that hull condition is worth considering.

Operational Insight

Biofouling can begin developing much sooner than many operators expect. The rate of growth varies considerably between locations and is influenced by factors such as water temperature, nutrient levels, local marine conditions and the length of time the vessel remains idle.

Even early-stage fouling and slime can increase hull resistance and begin affecting vessel efficiency. As growth becomes more established, the potential impact on vessel performance and fuel consumption increases.

The important point is that time at anchorage alone does not tell you the condition of the hull.
