A short video to share the successful rehabilitation of Paardevlei Estuary by Urban Landscape Solutions (ULS).
A brief summary:-
The site is situated in the Paardevlei Nature Reserve, and forms part of the Lourens River Conservation area.
1) THE BRIEF
The works was for the upgrading of the outfall stormwater canals and Lourens River stormwater outlet. Only endemic plants were to be used for the rehabilitation of the site.
2) CHALLENGES
Planting a diverse range of fynbos renosterveld plants without installing irrigation.
The plants used had to survive the tough, windy, sandy, seafront conditions of Strand Beach.
The time frame meant that a wide range of endemic, indigenous plants in the nature reserve had to be grown.
3) THE PROCESS
Search and Rescue:
The process of ‘searching’ for plants on site before earthworks were undertaken, in order to ‘rescue’ the plants from imminent destruction. A total of 5 267 plants were bagged into 4L, and 962 bulbs were ‘rescued’.
Civil Work:
Exeo Civils upgraded the outfall stormwater canals and Lourens River stormwater outlet at Strand Beach.
Plant Propagation:
Diverse propagation of endemic fynbos renosterveld at New Horizen Nursery.
41 325, 4L bag plants where grown as per contract, plus an additional 15 200, 4L bag plants grown.
Planting and Maintenance:
A total of 56 525, 4L bag plants were planted.
Heavy metals, bacteria, oil and other pollutants are removed with the help of Wetland plants.
Stabilization of sand dunes disturbed during construction.
Hydroseeding:
A mixture of grass and resonsterveld seed.
4) the RESULT
