Some before and Afters of a wee garden project we did a few weeks back πŸŒΏπŸŒ±πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ
For the problem grass area, the client opted for astro turf (sorry to say, but this is often the case of builders rubble being dumped in there during construction πŸ‘Ž boo to that).
We did a little paved area and edging and planted some gorgeous sandy-soil and wind tolerant indigenous plants too πŸ’• Happy days

Hi guys we go to MES, a shelter and safe space in Belville on Tuesday mornings. Where we help out a bit and teach the volunteers a little something about gardening. Hopefully bringing them back week after week to watch the veggies grow.

Achmat (Pic 2) is the head of the project that started this garden by himself and has grown the most beautiful onions, cabbages and lettuces. He is teaching us so much!! Thanks Achmat ✨

So far we've planted two lemons trees, weeded and spent time with wonderful people who find themselves on the street and take a day to participate πŸ™‚ away from the hustle of the streets. The dream is to make this an oasis and inspiration. Gardening is therapy

Water is Precious πŸ’¦
We live in a semi arid climate here in the Cape, even though the dams are full (thankfully 2020 brought something positive and we had plenty of rain),
we are never really in the clear from future droughts..
here are some useful tips for the average Joe, to save water and your plants, whether in pots or your garden..

> a deep watering less frequently, is more beneficial for your plants roots, and it will see them through the drier months. It encourages a deeper root system.

> harvest rain water where possible, even if you don't have a Jojo tank, buckets will do the job.

> water in the late afternoon / early morning

> Mulch! Mulch! Mulch! Also don't be hasty in raking up the dead leaves and organic matter. Leaf them to decompose

> consider planting indigenous plants in your garden as they are more suited to drier conditions

> build mounds around trees and shrubs to avoid run-off and allows moisture to soak slowly into the soil around the roots.
