I don't think I've ever walked into a home that looked exactly the same five years later.

Children get older, furniture gets moved around and rooms somehow find a new purpose.

That's one of the reasons I enjoy making timber furniture and lighting. Trends come and go, but a well-made piece has a way of finding its place, no matter how much life changes around it.

I'd be interested to know... which room in your home has changed the most?

Whenever I finish a coffee table, I find myself wondering what it'll look like a year from now.

Not when it's brand new, but once it's found its place in someone's home.

There'll probably be a stack of magazines, a couple of coffee mugs, the TV remote that everyone blames each other for losing and, if there are kids around, a puzzle or two that never quite gets packed away.

That's the way I like to imagine my furniture. Not perfectly styled, but properly lived with.

People often ask me what makes a piece of furniture last.

My answer is always the same. Take your time, choose the right timber and never cut corners.

The rest tends to look after itself.

What's the oldest piece of furniture in your home that's still part of everyday life?

16/08/2026

This entrance hall table is still a work in progress.

There's plenty left to do before it's ready to leave the workshop, but it's reached that stage where I can finally stand back and see it starting to come together.

The client already knows where it's going to sit in their home, and so do I. I can picture it in that entrance hall, quietly doing what good furniture does. Holding a bowl of keys, a vase of fresh flowers or the little things that somehow become part of everyday life.

That's one of the things I enjoy most about commissioned work. You're not just making a piece of furniture, you're making something for a specific place, for specific people. Knowing where it's belongs from the very beginning somehow makes the whole process more rewarding.

There's still some work to do on this one, but I'm looking forward to seeing it take its place.

Someone asked me the other day how I choose the timber for a piece.

It's a good question, but it's not actually where I start.

Before I think about the wood, I want to know who's going to live with it. Is it a dining table where the family gets together every Sunday? A desk for someone starting a new business? Or a bench that's going to welcome people home every day?

Once I know that, the rest tends to fall into place.

I've always believed furniture should do more than look good in a room. The pieces that matter are the ones that become part of everyday life. They pick up the odd scratch, witness birthdays and family dinners and, before you know it, no one can imagine the house without them.

That's the sort of furniture I enjoy making.

Woodworking isn't just about the sweet scent of sawn timber or the textures of the beautiful grains, it does involve a good head for math. Paired with the rich aroma of a great coffee, problem solved, the day begins!

Ooo just arrived! Many many planks of planed American white ash. The grain is just so gorgeous, definitely one of my favorites. Now to sort and laminate before being carefully and patiently crafted into a pair of bedside pedestals and a TV console.
