Rehabilitating a vital transport corridor in the Eastern Cape.​

The rehabilitation of Provincial Road MR00664, connecting the N6 to Molteno via Sterkstroom in the Chris Hani District in the Eastern Cape, is an investment in safer, more reliable infrastructure that strengthens regional connectivity and supports long-term economic growth.​
​
As the implementing agent, GIC is overseeing the delivery of this project in partnership with various stakeholders, including contractors, public bodies, and private sector participants. ​
​
The project's scope includes:​
• New 9.5/19 mm double chip seal surfacing​
• Construction of an imported G4 base layer​
• Construction of a cement-stabilised sub-base​
• New road markings and reflective road studs​
• Installation of new road signage​
• Maintenance of drainage structures, gabions, guardrails and fencing​
• Delivery of the Employer's contract participation goals​

Hoërskool Outeniqua - The Kwaggas - came to Bloemfontein full of belief and with good reason. This fixture has produced real drama in recent years, with the men from George pushing Grey all the way in 2025 and reminding everyone that reputation means nothing once the sideline is crossed. In 2026 however, The Grey ended the season in style, winning 45-17.

That's what makes this and any school rivalry special: two proud institutions bringing the best out of each other, year after year. It's in contests like these that boys grow - learning to earn respect through effort, to absorb pressure without losing composure, and to walk off the field better people than they were when they walked on.

At GIC, we back school sport because it is more than just points on a schoolboard. It builds but character, work ethic and lifelong bonds.

There is no fixture quite like Grey vs Grey. Two schools, one founder - Sir George Grey - with Grey College established in Bloemfontein in 1855 and Grey High following in Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha) a year later. For 170 years the brother schools have shared a name, a heritage and a handshake, and once a year they share a field.

On Reunion weekend in Bloemfontein, the older brother came out on top in an 85-point spectacle, with the team from the City of Roses winning 59-26. But when the final whistle blew, there were no opponents on that field, only Grey men. That's the real lesson rugby teaches: rivals for 70 minutes, brothers for life.

Harrow, founded in 1572 on the Hill in London, crossed continents to test themselves against Bloemfontein's finest — and even without the famed 1st XV taking the field, the boys in blue and white delivered a masterclass, winning 95-0. That's the depth of South African schools rugby.

But the scoreboard tells only part of the story. Matches like these teach what games like rugby are about: discipline with dominance, humility and resilience under pressure, and respect for visitors, with Harrow travelling 9,000 km south for the encounter. The bond between the schools will outlast the score.

In August, the Markotter Sports Ground saw Paul Roos avenge their defeat to Grey College last year, winning a tight fixture 37-29 in Stellenbosch and closing the gap in the head-to-head between the schools.

The two schools have produced nearly a hundred Springboks since their respective founding, with Grey College over 45 and Paul Roos exceeding 50. It’s among the reasons that the match between these two sides often bookends the domestic school rugby calendar: for many of these players, it’s only the end of the beginning.

Fixtures such as these forge character - the courage to front up against the best, the resilience to come back from a deficit, and the grace to shake hands when the whistle is blasted.

GIC is proud to have played a role in the development of 1,175 previously unserviced stands in Ivory Park.​
​
Our team delivered the essential infrastructure that lays the foundation for thriving communities, including roads, stormwater drainage, water reticulation, and a new sewer network.​
​
Along the way, we overcame challenges such as a high water table, deep sewer excavations, and even the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic. We also created employment opportunities for members of the local community, ensuring the project delivered benefits beyond the infrastructure itself.​
​
Completed in December 2023, this project is another example of how strong engineering helps build stronger communities—one foundation at a time.
