The latest version of the African Bat Database is now live! 🦇🌍 The African Bat Database Version 2.0 has been published by Prof. Ara Monadjem, Postdoctoral Research Fellow Cecilia Montauban, and collaborators, providing an updated open-access, curated resource of verified bat occurrence records from across the African continent. This version includes 18,409 records representing 312 bat species across 51 countries.

Alongside the new release, the team has launched the Africa Bat Database Explorer, an interactive tool that allows users to explore species distributions, map occurrence locations, and inspect individual records.

🔗 Explore the database: https://adam-kane.shinyapps.io/african_bat_dist/

The database is actively maintained and will continue to grow as new occurrence records and taxonomic revisions become available. Contributions are welcome! If you have records that could contribute to future releases and research outputs, please contact [email protected].

An exciting and growing resource supporting African research, conservation, and collaboration!

New research by Iván González-López, Kevin Malod, Robyn Dzirba, Tania Pogue and Chris Weldon published in Crop Protection shows that feeding sterile male Bactrocera dorsalis low concentrations of methyl eugenol or eugenol before release can dramatically reduce their response to methyl-eugenol traps.

This could enable the simultaneous use of sterile insect technique (SIT) and male annihilation technique (MAT), strengthening sustainable management of this globally important fruit pest while reducing reliance on chemical control.
