August was about colour, and about the fact that colour is never only about colour.

The first guide answers the question we get asked in-store more than any other: why does the paint look different at home than it did in the shop? Light, undertones, UV exposure, salt air and what is already in your room are all doing more work than the tin is. It also covers the test pot method properly, which will save you a repaint.

The second guide is about sheen — the decision almost nobody makes on purpose. Matt, satin or enamel is not a taste question. It decides whether you can wipe a mark off the wall, how visible your plaster is, and how soon you are painting again.

Everyone argues about the colour. Almost nobody chooses the sheen on purpose.

And the sheen is the part that decides whether you can wipe a mark off the wall or whether the mark takes the colour with it.

Same colour. Three walls. Three completely different rooms.

Nothing here changed except the sheen level, and most people never think about it until the wall is already up.

A matt finish absorbs light from every direction. It reads deeper and softer, it evens out an imperfect plaster run, and it forgives the wall for being a wall.

Add sheen and the light comes back at you in an organised way. The same colour reads lighter, cleaner and slightly more saturated. It also shows every ridge, patch and roller stop you left behind.

And sheen decides how the surface lives. The wall in a passage gets shoulders and school bags against it. That wall has to be washable, which is a job for a satin finish like Satin Silk. The wall behind your headboard does not, and a matt will look better there.

So settle the finish before you argue about the colour. The finish is half the colour.

The colour on your wall is not the colour in the tin. It is the colour in the tin, plus whatever is underneath it.

This is the part everyone skips, and it is the part that decides whether the job holds.

New cement plaster is strongly alkaline. Paint it directly and the alkalinity will work against the coating over time, and you will see it long before you expected to. Prominent Paints Damp Cure and Neuklad Alkali Resistant Primer is formulated for cement plaster and masonry, and it is the sensible first coat on new interior plaster work.

An old painted wall is a different problem. If the existing coating is chalking, or has lost its grip on the plaster beneath it, your beautiful new colour is only ever as attached as the layer under it. Rub a dry hand across the wall. If it comes away powdery, you have work to do first.

And patches. A patched wall is two surfaces pretending to be one. They absorb differently, so they will finish differently, and you will see the difference in raking light for the rest of the wall's life.

Prep is not the boring part before the painting. Prep is the painting.

There is one wall in your house that takes more punishment than any other, and nobody ever thinks about it until it is too late.

The passage.

School bags. Shoulders. A bicycle being wheeled through. Furniture on moving day. The dog. Every one of those is a small negotiation between your wall and the rest of your life, and the wall usually loses.
