House Lady Ellen has received a 2025 SAIA-KZN Award for Architecture

The Awards jury had this to say :
“The stairs from the garage lead up to the well considered path of smooth, black organic shaped slate paving stones, that seem to float on the coarse beach pebbles leading one past a raised pool to the front door.

On arrival one looks back across the living room and the verdant leaves in the garden via a singular large rectangular, zen window, which frames the ocean to the east.

This is a case of making much more out of less.”

Thank you to for this accolade and our client for allowing us to express ourselves and obviously our excellent contractor for bringing this vision to life.

House McLean has received a 2025 SAIA-KZN Special mention

The Awards jury had this to say :

“It is a delight to ascend through a sun dappled
brise-soleil stairway to a sea-facing living area
extending from the Indian ocean horizon to the
lush sub-tropical garden.

The generous seating steps from the kitchen to
the garden provide not only a perfect opportunity
for conversation between the chef and others,
but a perfect eating place with magnificent sea
views.”

Thank you to for this acknowledgment, our repeat client for trusting us again and the contractor for delivering this home from such a tricky starting point.

197 High Ridge road received a 2023 SAIA-KZN Special mention

The Awards jury had this to say :

“After a number of remodellings, the interior of the old building had become entangled and dark, and it was time to rethink the conceptual basis of the house.

The jury was taken by the intervention comprising the north-facing bedroom wing running parallel and proud of the living wing, which in an open spatial sequence terminates in the exterior entertainment area and distant views over Durban.”

Thank you to for the recognition, our client for allowing us space to redefine their home and the contractor for working closely with us to create this home.

This award is dedicated to our late oom, Leon Conradie, who was instrumental in the redesign of this home. Dankie XL

A New Beginning
•
In late 2023, our client asked us to help shape their future home (one they hadn’t yet found !) Among the properties we explored was a house in La Lucia, slightly over budget and at odds with their vision. Though a stones throw from the beach, it had been cosmetically modernised, with a constrained layout, average natural light, and little architectural coherence.

By stripping back surface updates, the original structure was allowed to breathe. Spatial flow was reworked, materials reconsidered, and natural light invited deeper into the plan.
•
What emerged is a calm, coastal home connected to its site, open to the breeze, the light, and the life unfolding around it.

Courtyard Sanctuary
•
Removing the courtyard roof opened the home’s heart to the sky. The courtyard was reimagined as a planted, open-air space that brings light, air, and clarity into the centre of the plan. Surrounded by the living wing, it offers shelter from the wind and draws northern light deep into the interiors.
•
More than just a garden, it’s a pause point. A calm middle ground that softens the home and creates a quiet connection between inside and out, becoming a calming backdrop from the lounge.

Interior Flow

A restrained palette brings calm and clarity. Dark slate floors meet white walls, while the window seats frame key views and draw light inward. Outside, bagged brickwork adds texture and permanence to the building as a whole.
•
Timber pergolas and screens introduce warmth and ever changing shadow play. A time stamp and sense of rhythm as light moves through the day.

Product

Taking full advantage of the light through the day and opening up to the curb to create an active street edge, the long narrow space is defined by the elongated bar. Acting as a datum, the functions of the café would happen across its length; from sandwich prep, pay point, cake display, coffee machine, water station to takeaway pick up.
