SALI - South African Landscapers Institute

The Durban Botanic Gardens, established in 1849, is Africa’s oldest surviving botanical garden. It was originally created near the Port Natal to experiment with crops like sugar, tea, and coffee that could support the colony’s economy.

A key figure in its early development was Dr. Charles Johnston, who helped establish the garden’s scientific purpose. Another important contributor was John Medley Wood, curator from 1882 to 1913, who expanded plant collections and turned the gardens into a centre for botanical research. During his tenure, the gardens gained international recognition, especially for their work with cycads.

Later, Ernest Thorp continued developing the gardens’ scientific role and herbarium collections, strengthening their reputation in plant conservation.

Today, the gardens span about 15 hectares and are known for their rich diversity of indigenous and exotic plants, particularly cycads, palms, and orchids. In summary, the Durban Botanic Gardens evolved from a colonial agricultural testing site into a leading centre for plant science, conservation, and public recreation.
