The Geyser & You
We often get asked," does switching my Geyser off and on save me money?"
The answer? It depends.
Let's be scientific about this, a 100 litre Geyser with a 5 kW element (5 used purely for the maths) takes 74 minutes and 92 seconds to get to 55°c from 14°c and will use 6.477 kWh in doing so, so if you are paying R1.98c per kWh that will cost you R12.82c to heat it once, but now the element switches off and the Geyser cools down by roughly 10°c and then it starts heating again, so over a 24hr period it will reheat itself roughly every 3 hours which translates into another 6.3 kWh over a 24hr period. This results in a monthly spend of R762 in a month.
Introduce the timer that switches the Geyser on once a day for two hours to heat from 14°c to 55°c, which translates into a usage of 6.477 kWh per day, and a monthly spend of R384.00.
There are variables that can't be accounted for and obviously the more you heat the Geyser the more you'll spend, and these figures are hypothetical.
So does it save?
