Like the little old lady at the end of The Time Traveller’s Wife, growing foxgloves from seed is an exercise best left to those who are into delayed gratification followed by heartbreak. They will only flower in their second year and then promptly die. But. What a wondrous thing that flower is! Cut a few for the vase and bring them indoors to appreciate the hard work this little plant devoted two years of its life to to the fullest.

Just when you thought winter had come, and with it colour in the garden had left, along comes Hypoestes aristata with its gorgeous mauve and pink, polka-dotted flowers that will brighten your garden from May to early Spring! The ribbon bush (which is pronounce hi-po-es-tees, so you can stop sniggering) will quickly grow to 1.5m and also comes in white and more compact varieties. Cut this indigenous bush back hard after flowering and use it in a mixed border where you want colour in the winter months.

This cuddly critter is the caterpillar of a hawk or sphinx moth - voracious eaters who could strip an arum lily or impatient bare in a matter of days. Their numbers are dwindling due to - what a surprise - habitat destruction. So before you grab your can of poison consider picking them off your prized plants and placing them on a Zantedeschia in a less attention grabbing spot. I keep an arum at the back of the house for the sole purpose of helping these little guys become fully fledged adults. The plants will be a bit graunched, but will survive - like most of us post 2020. Also, they will definitely p**p on you, but don’t take it personally.

Did you know that Dietes grandiflora is a better rain predictor than the SA weather service? These wild irises - aptly also known as rain lilies - are indigenous to South Africa, water wise, frost hardy and will grow in both sun and shade. They flower when rain or stormy weather is on the way. Test them. They dare you! Dietes grow easily from splits and will quickly form a striking clump of strappy leaves that grow a meter tall and as wide as you’ll let them.
