South Africa is talking about battery storage. Your solar system should be too. 🔋

South Africa’s latest electricity procurement announcement puts battery storage firmly in the spotlight, with 4,600 MW of battery storage prioritised in the first stage of the new programme.

Why does this matter to you as a homeowner or business owner? Because generating electricity and using it at the right time are two different things.

Solar panels generate power when sunlight is available, but your household or business may need electricity long after the sun goes down. A properly designed battery system can store surplus solar energy for use later, helping you make better use of the electricity you generate.

But bigger isn't automatically better. The right system depends on your electricity consumption, which appliances or equipment need to keep running, and how long you need them powered.

On Sunday, 25 October, from 08:00 to 16:00, a large portion of George is scheduled for a planned electricity outage while alterations are made to the electrical mains. Areas listed include George Central, George South, George Industrial, Garden Route Mall, Kraaibosch, Loerie Park, Conville, Rosemoor, Parkdene, Victoria Bay, Victoria Heights and several surrounding areas.

This one isn’t load shedding.
We actually know it’s coming.

And that means you have time to prepare.

If you have an inverter, battery or solar system, don’t wait until 08:01 on the 25th to find out whether your backup power actually works.

Before the outage, check that your batteries are holding charge, know which circuits are connected to backup, test the equipment under load and make sure your electrical installation is safe and in good working order.

Because the best time to discover a backup-power problem is before the power goes off — not when the coffee machine, Wi-Fi and fridge all go quiet at once. ☕📵

You installed solar to save money.

Paying unnecessary registration costs because you missed an important deadline? That would be rather ironic.

If you’re an Eskom-supplied customer with a grid-connected rooftop solar system, Eskom’s current registration-fee waiver for qualifying Small-Scale Embedded Generation systems of up to 50 kVA runs until 30 September 2026.

That means there are only 3 days left.

Eskom states that registration helps ensure customer-owned generation is safely and responsibly connected to the electricity network. Eligible systems require documentation including a Certificate of Compliance, inverter test certificate and installation test report.
