OUT OF SIGHT DOESN’T MEAN OUT OF HARM

Illegal dumping carries a cost long after the waste has been abandoned. Industry estimates put South Africa’s annual illegal dumping clean-up burden at more than 180,000 tonnes of waste and around R350 million to taxpayers, while municipalities report that cleaning dumped waste can cost up to 20 times more than collecting it properly in the first place.

Electronic waste should never be part of that problem. Computers, printers, batteries, lighting equipment and other electronic products contain materials that can be recovered, alongside components that require specialist treatment.

Once dumped illegally, those materials are far less likely to be recovered and far more likely to become part of an avoidable environmental and municipal burden.

CELEBRATING THE WOMEN HELPING DRIVE SOUTH AFRICA'S CIRCULAR ECONOMY

National Women's Day is an opportunity to recognise the many women helping shape South Africa's recycling and circular economy.

Across the country, women are making a difference at every stage of the value chain – as reclaimers recovering valuable materials, technicians and scientists developing recycling solutions, compliance specialists supporting Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), and leaders helping businesses build a more sustainable future.

South Africa's recycling economy is supported by an estimated 60,000 to 90,000 waste pickers, alongside thousands of people working across the broader recycling industry. Many of them are women whose contribution often goes unseen.

This Women's Day, Reclite SA celebrates the skill, dedication and leadership of the women helping to build a cleaner, more circular South Africa.

WHY LITHIUM BATTERIES DON’T BELONG IN YOUR BIN

According to the International Energy Agency, global lithium-ion battery deployment in 2025 was six times higher than it was in 2020 as demand for electric vehicles, energy storage and portable electronics continues to grow.

As these batteries reach the end of their useful lives, they’ll require responsible collection and recycling. Damaged or crushed lithium-ion batteries can ignite during collection, transport or processing, creating risks for waste collectors, recycling facilities and landfill sites.

EVERY WASTE STREAM NEEDS ITS CHAMPIONS

Plastic Free July is a timely reminder that South Africa’s waste challenge is bigger than any one material, company or sector.

In 2024, South Africa recycled 471,000 tonnes of plastic waste – proof of the important role played by the country’s plastics recycling industry. But it also shows the scale of the challenge and why every recyclable waste stream needs responsible, specialist attention.

Reclite SA supports its partners in the plastics recycling sector and the important work they do in keeping plastic waste out of the environment while giving it a valuable second life.

The same principle applies across the recycling economy: the more responsibly each waste stream is managed, the stronger the circular economy becomes.
