Valuable lesson for all business owners...

A client asked me how much it cost to do a job.
I replied: "R 15000"
He said to me: 'For this job? That's so much! ''
I asked, "How much did you think it would cost you?"
'' At most R 5000 or free, it's a quick job ''
`` For R 5000 I invite you to do it yourself ''
'' It's just that I don't know how to do it ''
'' For R 5000 I teach you, so in addition to saving you R10000, you will have the knowledge for the next time you request it. "
It felt right and he accepted.
"I will let you know what you will need to get started: you need tools: Ladder, rollers, roller trays, brushes, paint pots, drop sheets, scrapers, filler, no more gaps, sand paper etc etc….
"But I don't have all these tools and I don't want to buy all of this for just one job ''
'' Well, then for R 5000 more I rent you all the necessary tools so you can do it ''
Plus, you need to buy all paint and materials you need for the job.

But you have to be very punctual because I have multiple jobs to go to. I'll be waiting for you Saturday morning at 7 am to start with all the work.
'' Oops, no ... Buying these things takes too much time and more money.
_ You know? It's too early. I'd better give you the R 15000 I've already done my math and it will cost me more.

Once again I am going to vent. Property owners, estate agents, conveyancing attorneys and even our own municipality do not care if they use "fly-by-night" unregistered electrical contractors to do their electrical installations or issue fraudulent COC's. Just this week alone we had two installations that had electrical work done by some of these "fly-by-night" contractors that is completely non-compliant. Then the owners wants to know by us why is the work not compliant a and what can be done to rectify it. In one case, the municipality actually referred the client to this "unregistered" contractor. People check the credentials of the contractor you hire. The first thing you need to ask them, and it is your right to do so, is that they must produce to you their letter from Department of Labour which states that they are a registered contractor. Their details plus ID number MUST be on that letter. If they cannot produce it, then they are not registered! These "contractors" are putting you and your family in danger with their hazardous workmanship. They don't care about your safety, only the money in their pockets. It might sound to some people like sour grapes, but if your child is shocked to death by shoddy workmanship, who are you going to blame? You cannot hold the "contractor" liable as he is long gone with your money. You can only blame yourself that you did not make sure that the person who is doing this electrical work is actually qualified to do so. I think it is high time that all us registered electrical contractors band together and approach the municipality and the Department of Labour and start laying complaints against these "contractors". Hopefully then something will start happening.
