Makhanda SAPS nab suspect, recover loaded stolen firearm

By Phila-Nathi Mapisa

A 33-year-old man is set to appear in court after being arrested last Thursday, following a swift intelligence-driven operation by SAPS members.

Acting on information received from the community during an ongoing investigation, officers tracked the suspect to Albany Road, where he was arrested and a loaded stolen firearm was recovered, according to police spokesperson Captain Marius McCarthy.

McCarthy said preliminary investigations confirmed the weapon had previously been reported stolen, and it has since been submitted for ballistic testing β€” a standard procedure that could link the firearm to other crimes.

"This successful operation highlights the power of partnership between SAPS and the community. Our members removed a dangerous weapon from our streets before it could be used to terrorise innocent citizens."

Acting Sarah Baartman District Police Commissioner Brigadier Asogran Naidoo welcomed the arrest, calling on communities to continue speaking out against crime.

"We will not tolerate illegal fi****ms on our streets," Naidoo said. "I commend the brave community members who spoke up and the disciplined officers who executed this operational response safely. Together, we are reclaiming our streets from criminals."

The suspect faces charges of illegal possession of a firearm and is expected to appear before the Makhanda Magistrate's Court next week.
