Architecture can change the trajectory of a community. 🏀

Masiphumelele is an informal settlement in Noordhoek, Cape Town. Like many communities of its kind, it had the people, the energy and the passion for sport — but not the infrastructure to support it.

Design Scape was appointed to design a new sports facility for Masiphumelele — comprising an administration wing, covered seating, and an indoor sports hall. The building is grounded in honest materiality — face-brick walls, a mono-pitch roof falling to the north, and a design language that is simple, durable and dignified.

This is what socially responsive architecture looks like in practice. Not imposing. Not performative. Just a well-designed building that gives a community what it deserves.

Every project we take on has a brief. This one had a purpose.

This three-floor retail development in Umhlanga was designed around a single driving principle — maximum visibility from all sides. Tenants needed exposure. The building needed presence. And the design needed to respond to the energy and movement of one of South Africa's fastest-growing commercial precincts.

The result is a building in which the design language presents each element as an individual component — strung together to form a dynamic architectural object that shifts in character from every angle. The facade responds to climate, integrates into the landscape, and comes alive at night in a way that few commercial buildings do.

An airport is not just a building — it is a system. It must process thousands of people daily, integrate with existing infrastructure, meet strict aviation regulations, and still arrive as a confident architectural statement.

Design Scape was appointed to design a new terminal extension to Cape Town International Airport. Guided by international best practice, the new terminal connects directly to the existing Central Terminal Building — complementing its form while laying the foundation for the airport's future expansion.

Public infrastructure at this scale demands more than creativity. It demands discipline, coordination and a deep understanding of how people move through space.
