Load shedding changed the conversation permanently. ⚡

Buildings that rely entirely on municipal power are commercially vulnerable in South Africa today. Every hour of load shedding is a cost to productivity, a risk to perishables, a disruption to operations. For hospitals and healthcare facilities, it is a patient safety issue.

Energy-resilient design — correct solar orientation, passive cooling, backup systems integrated at concept stage rather than bolted on afterwards — is no longer a premium option. It is responsible architecture.

The entrance is the first spatial experience a building delivers. 🚪

It sets expectations before a word is spoken. It communicates the character of everything that follows — the quality of the decisions, the level of care, the intention behind the design. A well-designed entrance tells you that the rest of the building was thought through with the same attention.

A poor entrance does the opposite. It undermines everything that follows, regardless of how good the interior is. And unlike most architectural mistakes, entrance failures are experienced by every single person who visits the building — every time they arrive.

The most resilient buildings are not those designed for a single function. 🏛️

They are the ones with structural integrity and spatial quality flexible enough to absorb change over decades. Office buildings that become apartments. Industrial warehouses that become galleries. Schools that become community centres. These transitions happen because the original architecture was good enough to survive its own obsolescence.

Adaptive reuse is not a trend. It is what good architecture looks like across time — buildings that were designed with enough rigour to remain useful long after the original brief has expired.
