Of course, we all like to post pictures of the beautiful aspects of this lifestyle and job. The flowers, the lambs, the sunsets - because that is what is enjoyable to photograph and the intention is to share the joy and the beauty. 🦋

But it would be dishonest to leave out the fact that some days I feel like giving up. That each month is a scrape financially and that we spend so much time working around broken and sub-optimal stuff.

Today is one of the days.

Everything feels relentless and I’m just so tired.

Sales and work have slowed, but costs haven’t. It is HOT and dry and Bruce and I both feel low-grade nausea for whatever reason. There’s talk about the watering of our garden being a problem (so will everything I’ve invested just wither and die this summer?) and I’m sick of constant nonsense and a lack of respect from people.

Luckily, this feeling usually passes after a day or three.

But please don’t get caught up in romanticising farming, homesteading and the peasant class.

Apparently sheep eat dahlias. Good to know 😑

They pushed under the dahlia field gate (luckily we saw them soon after), so we secured it better. Then the cow got out two night in a row and visited the landlords house - fence is being repaired now (to be fair, the poles are very old and rotten anyway) and now the sheep broke into the tunnel and ate a few tomatoes. 🙃

This is very much a result of working with broken and damaged stuff - it wastes a lot of time.

But, we persevere.

Garlic scapes are a delicacy. We fry them in butter.

We harvest these from the Elephant garlic and then leave the plants in the ground for another month before harvesting. 🧄
