🏗️💧 Restoring Capacity at Harmony Gold Mine in Welkom 💧🏗️

T&T Marine proudly partnered with Harmony Gold Mine in Welkom to carry out vital slime dam dredging operation.
Years of accumulated sediment and reed growth had reduced the dam’s capacity, posing both operational and environmental risks.

Using specialized dredging equipment, our team safely removed the built-up material and pumped it via a booster system into Harmony’s existing pipeline network. The slurry was then screened and processed through the mine’s infrastructure, supporting both tailings management and potential resource recovery.

✅ Improved dam safety
✅ Increased storage capacity
✅ Seamless integration with client systems

🚧🌊 Marine Precision at Work: Koeberg Dredging with the “Induna” 🌊🚧

T&T Marine’s custom-built dredging barge, the “Induna”, took on a critical task at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, clearing the intake basin to ensure uninterrupted cooling water flow to the reactors.

Using a 250mm floating pipeline, the Induna pumped a slurry mixture of sand, shells, and marine debris directly from the basin to the adjacent beach. The pipeline floats on the surface, allowing flexibility as the barge moves and ensuring continuous discharge without the need for booster pumps.

💡 How it works:

A powerful jet loosens compact seabed material.

The Induna's dredge pump sucks up the material.

The floating pipeline transports it safely to shore.

Here's a peak into the assembly and installation of the Induna and it's Pipeline.

📍 Project Highlight: Koeberg Nuclear Power Station | Eskom

T&T Marine was proudly entrusted with a critical dredging operation at South Africa’s only commercial nuclear power station, Koeberg, located near Cape Town.

Our team successfully removed built-up marine sediment from the seawater intake basin, ensuring the continuous flow of clean cooling water essential to the plant’s reactor operation.

Supporting South Africa’s Energy Backbone.

Located just 30 km north of Cape Town, Koeberg Nuclear Power Station is Africa’s only commercial nuclear facility, generating 1,940 MW and supplying roughly 5% of South Africa’s electricity.

🌊 At the heart of Koeberg’s cooling system is a seawater intake basin that relies on periodic maintenance dredging to ensure sediment-free water for reactor cooling. This basin acts as a stilling zone, naturally allowing silt to settle before water enters the system. T&T Marine is proud to be part of the Koeberg maintenance operation.

T&T Marine acknowledges the critical role of dredging in maintaining uninterrupted, safe, and efficient operations at facilities like Koeberg. We commend efforts to explore permanent sand pumping solutions as part of South Africa’s long-term infrastructure resilience.

⚓ Enhancing Port Capacity at Coega Harbour

T&T Marine is honoured to have played a pivotal role in the development of Coega Harbour, one of South Africa's most strategically significant deep-water ports.

Our team executed comprehensive dredging operations to deepen the approach channels and turning basins, facilitating the safe navigation of large vessels and supporting the port's capacity to handle 12,500 TEU container ships and 120,000 DWT bulk carriers.

Utilizing advanced dredging techniques and equipment, we contributed to the excavation of 13.8 million cubic metres of material, ensuring the harbour's infrastructure meets international standards for maritime safety and efficiency .

This project is another prime example of our commitment to delivering high-quality marine engineering solutions that bolster South Africa's economic growth and global trade connectivity.
