This weekend we had a stand at the Walkerville Agricultural Society Show, as we have for the past three years. We do get a lot of interest from visitors about the On-Sun solar water heater, but most people baulk at the cost of our system - and then they carry on paying Eskom or their municipal suppliers for warming their water every month.

Very few people really do the calculations, and we are also remiss by not providing more information on the real cost of heating water. The day you instal a solar water heater, your electricity bill will drop, and you have to factor that into the cost of financing your SWH. We will put up some figures on this page soon.

Anyway, the Walkerville Show is always a wonderful meeting place for South Africans of all backgrounds. There is a strong sense of community out there, and the craft beer stand has some of the country's finest brews on tap.

We had many visitors to our stand, including an architect from Potchefstroom who has been getting hot water from his On-Sun for ten years. The only problem he has had in this time has been excessive dripping from the Masterflo pressure/relief valve - the black plastic cartridge that sticks out the side of the On-Sun.

This is perhaps the only part of the On-Sun system that occasionally needs attention. My own On-Sun SWH has run for ten years without any problems.

If you are an On-Sun owner and your SWH starts running water excessively from the Cobra Masterflo II, please contact me or Willi for advice. Most plumbing stores in smaller South African towns do not stock the 200 kPa Cobra cartridge used in the On-Sun.

In an emergency you can fit a 100 kPa Cobra cartridge, but never a 400 kPa cartridge - this will result in the 200 kPa TP safety valve opening and water being discharged from the system.

We can send you a new 200 kPa cartridge by courier or post. When fitting that has resolved your problem, send the original unit back to the factory for repair, and when you get it back, keep it on hand in case you have another pressure valve issue in the future.

And a last word... why would a precision-made device like the Cobra Masterflo cartridge ever give trouble? Because whenever Joburg Water pipes break and need repair, dirt, sand and other particulates inevitably enter the water reticulation system and cause problems.

The same thing happens in rural municipalities.

Best wishes to all On-Sun owners.

And an invitation to all prospective On-Sun owners to give me a call!

Regards
John

Our latest installation in Westminster Drive, Craighall Park. It replaces an electric geyser that failed, and is connected to the mains so hot water is always available when the sun does not shine.

On Saturday 3 December we installed the second of two On-Sun solar water heaters for a client in Mulbarton. The first one was a standard installation on the north-facing roof of the main house. The second one was more challenging as the roof of the garden cottage is East-West facing. We decided to mount it on a steel frame placed on top of a small north-facing roof which is over some built-in cupboards in the cottage. Because we did not want the little roof to take the full weight of the On-Sun (240 kg), we made up some wall brackets to take some of the load. We drilled holes through the bricks to take the hot and cold water pipes, and ended up with a neat installation. It was blazing hot on Saturday. Our considerate client laid on a couple of VERY welcome frosties when the work was done - thanks Corrie!

ON-SUN PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

The On-Sun is a very reliable solar water heating system and seldom needs attention. Any minor problems associated with water leaks can be attended to as and when they occur. It is recommended that preventive maintenance be performed on a regular basis to address any corrosion that might be occurring, and to check and replace the foam rubber sleeves on the hot and cold water pipes. This should be done every 5 -8 years. Here is a maintenance operation performed on an On-Sun 150 eight years after installation (with no problems or call-outs during this period).

26 Hetty Avenue, Fairland Johannesburg. Installed April 2008. Serviced 25 June 2016

There was corrosion at the bottom of the collector tray, as well as a dark, sticky deposit on the glass and on the freeze hose inspection cover. This came from a nearby tree, which apparently exudes gum when it flowers, and this is carried around by the wind. It was cleaned off using dish-washing liquid and water. The freeze hoses were inspected and checked for leaks – there were none. The rust was removed with sandpaper and steel wool, and the affected areas sprayed with cold galvanizing spray. New stainless steel screws were used to close the freeze hose cover, the foam rubber sleeves on the water pipes were replaced, and an insulating cover made for the Masterflo cartridge. This On-Sun is good for another eight years!

Every householder in Gauteng is faced with a scary monthly electricity bill, and it seems that regular increases are inevitable for the foreseeable future!

Coupled with the rising cost of food, and just about everything else, it becomes harder to make ends meet, let alone make any savings.

One way to reduce electricity costs is by installing a solar water heater.

Although the initial costs may seem high, you start saving electricity right away. And provided that you instal a system with a known track record, you should have an investment that will harvest hot water from the sun for the next 25 years or more.

My name is John Ledger and I have been installing the 'On-Sun' South African solar water heaters for more than ten years.

I will be happy to share my experience and expertise to help anyone who is interested in solar water heating. I operate in Gauteng, but will try to provide advice to interested folk from anywhere in 'Sunny South Africa'.

If you are seriously interested in investing in a solar geyser, I will provide a free quotation after visiting your home and discussing your requirements.

The On-Sun solar water heater was designed by Willi Sureman in 1990, and has been built in the small Free State town of Ladybrand for 27 years since then.

These proudly South African solar geysers are strong and reliable in sun and snow, and have been operating successfully in some of the harshest conditions imaginable. These include the hot and dry northern Cape, the eastern Free State, and the highlands of Lesotho, where snow and freezing conditions are experienced in winter.

This page will provide updates on new installations, tips for On-Sun owners, and news about this proven product.
