Space that speaks to the soul...
Metaphor's approach is personal, we thrive on creating spaces accor I love what I do. This is crazy!

“When I developed Metaphor in 2012 I had an inkling of the direction that I wanted to take, everyday the picture gets clearer. Whenever a client tells me how happy he is to come home it comes into focus a little. As I watch each bespoke piece of furniture being crafted from my sketch into real life, my perspective is fine tuned. But I also believe in using my power as designer to make choices that are both economically and environmentally beneficial. My job is to create spaces for you that are not only mind-numbingly gorgeous, but practical, comfortable and sustainable. In South Africa we are blessed with an abundance local materials as well as a wealth of highly experienced craftsman. Every day South Africans actively put their blinkers on and head blindly into chain retailers to purchase low quality, mass produced, toxic, carbon laden exported furniture items. Imagine you could get better value for money by investing in healthier, personalized furniture that would last you years and stimulate local economy at the same time! The name “Metaphor” comes from my idea that your home (or office, shop or fairy garden) should reflect who you are. I take into account client specific requirements. I love that each project opens up opportunities for new design solutions and that each client’s personality brings forward a new aesthetic to be incorporated into the space.

There’s something incredibly fulfilling about seeing an idea move from paper to finally into something tangible. This bookshelf has a personality of its own, with playful curves, a little colour and just the right amount of character.

Behind every finished space are countless conversations, considered decisions, creative minds and skilled hands. A reminder that great design is never the work of one, but the result of many coming together.

The palette before the room.

Timber, stone, tile, hardware and finish considered individually but always selected with the bigger picture in mind.

Curating the final layers.
The turniture may be in and the construction complete, but it’s often these last decisions les, tumiture, textile and styling that make a space feel finished.

From full interior renovations to considered individual spaces, our approach is always rooted in creating homes that feel personal, layered and enduring.

We’re now opening our diary for select 2027 projects.

A room can tell a story before anything else is added

Designed exclusively for Osborne & Little by Joanna Charlotte, Coastline depicts majestic cedar trees overlooking a bay scattered with rocky islands and foxgloves.

We used it as a feature wall, framed in warm timber to give the mural presence and make it feel almost like a piece of art within the room. A beautiful balance of pattern, nature and materiality.

Sometimes the smallest corner gets to have the most personality.

Pattern, warm timber and a little brass proof that practical spaces don’t need to feel purely practical.

From drawings to something you can finally stand inside.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about seeing months of decisions, details and problem-solving come together in the finished space

Where the layers begin.

Pattern, colour, scale and texture the quiet process of finding the combinations that make a room feel collected rather than simply decorated.

07/09/2026

It starts with an idea. Then a sketch. Then a lot of conversations, samples, sawdust and problem-solving. Watching a custom piece take shape is still one of the most satisfying parts of what we do.
