We recently received this question from a client:
Dear Martin,
​What would generally cause this cracking? (see attached image) I'd say sun? Weathering?

Answer from Martin our technical director at SA Damp:
​​Hi Riaan,
Water leeching into the plaster along with weathering. The original plaster probably dried too quickly when applied, causing stresses in the plaster that are later released as cracks and de-stressing. This is mild plaster degradation and it will rapidly decay if cracks are not treated. ​Another cause of the plaster cracks could have been due to heavy exposure to soaking water. ​This water absorption will cause extreme accelerated ​​weathering usually found in residential housing in South Africa. In this picture, water absorption is about to explode. This could cause rapid structural issues and if not treated and costs will soar. The wall should be sealed properly with long life materials and applicators to ensure a wall restoration better than new.
