Change your habits. Become energy wise. This won’t cost you a cent and will make a big difference
*Switch off all non-essential lights – especially when you leave a room.
*Defrost your freezer on a regular basis.
*Turn off and unplug all appliances that are not in use. Do not use the ‘standby’ modes on appliances.
*Air dry your clothes.
* Don’t waste water, hot or cold by needlessly letting taps run.
*Kettles use less energy than stoves to heat water. Always boil the exact amount of water required.
*Recycle your rubbish. Indirect electricity saving.
*Maximise the use of natural light. Open curtains and blinds to let the sun in and close them again at night to keep the heat in.
*Use the microwave instead of the oven when possible.

EXCITING TIPS TO GREENIFY AND SAVE MONEY WITH YOUR HOME.

There are a few great ideas to save money with your electricity consumption and to help save the planet at the same time. We've put together some ideas and tips below:

1. Switch to LED light bulb: LED’s use a fraction of energy compared to normal bulbs and fluorescent bulbs.

2. Install a motion sensor: Installing a motion sensor in your rooms will help to save money because the lights will only be on when you are in the room and as soon as you leave the room the lights turn off again.

3. Get unplugged: Unplugging your electrical appliances that use a standby mode can help you save money each day. These appliances can use a lot of electricity on that you may not be aware of.

4. Use appliances efficiently: Use appliances like a washing machine and dishwasher only when you have a full load and get appliances that are energy and water efficient.

5. Let the sun shine: The cheapest source of heating and energy is outside your window. Get a solar panel to help power your house. Open the curtains and blinds so that the sun can heat up your house and cut back on the heating cost in the winter.

6. Stop leaks: Repair any leaking pipes, taps, showerheads...

Hungry Appliances

The first step in saving electricity is to understand how electricity is used in your home. South African households, on average, use electricity in the following ways:

Space heating and cooling: 18%
Lighting: 17%
Fridges and freezers: 8%
Cooking: 11%
Consumer electronics: 5%
Consumer electronics on standby mode: 15%
Geysers: 24%
Miscellaneous: 2%

Energy's tip for the day: Reduce the temperature of your geyser to around 55 degrees so that you don't need to add too much cold water when you shower or do the dishes. You will save on electricity and water consumption.

Steps to saving electricity by spending up to R3 000
• Install a geyser controller, , which checks the current during the pre-programmed time period and switches off the circuit at the optimum time
• Replace your showerhead with a water efficient showerhead
• Change your down-lights to LEDs – plus draw 10% of the energy of regular down-lights
• Insulate hot water geysers and pipes. While most people are aware of a geyser blanket to assist with insulation, the lagging of the hot water outlet pipe is just as important as this is where much of the heat losses occur.
