Project Spotlight: Transporting & Positioning Modular Substations

As part of a major mining infrastructure project in the Northern Cape, Lovemore Bros was appointed to transport and position nine modular substations, each presenting its own unique engineering challenge.

Project highlights:

• 9 modular substations transported and positioned
• Largest unit: 114 tonnes, measuring 23 m x 8.4 m x 4.9 m
• Transported using our 12-axle self-propelled trailer (SPMT)
• One substation was synchronised-jacked 2.6 m before being skidded 30 m into its final position due to the absence of a transport route
• Completed in demanding site conditions, from -1°C winter mornings to 40°C summer days
• Almost 16,000 worked hours completed with zero injuries or incidents

A milestone worth celebrating.

The successful placement of the first beams on the outer span of the Westville Viaduct marks another important step forward on this landmark infrastructure project.

Executed using a custom hydraulic gantry lifting solution in a highly constrained working area. There has been a considerable amount of planning involved - almost two years!

We coud not have achieved this without our team of specialists and the supportive collaboration with our clients - Struttura Consulting (Pty) Ltd, Post Tensioning & Structural Solutions (Pty) Ltd and AQUA EXR JV (Pty) Ltd.
