Nobody announces a decision to just connect the borehole and leave it.
It happens quietly. The pump works, the pressure is fine, the water looks the same as any other water, and there are seventeen other things on the list.
So the borehole water goes to the kitchen cold tap and the bathrooms and the geyser, and the family drinks it and showers in it and makes the school lunch with it, and the thinking is that it will be fine.
Most of the time nobody gets obviously sick.
But the kids are smaller. Their kidneys are newer. The thresholds that apply to adults do not apply to a six-year-old drinking a litre and a half a day from a source that has never been tested.
The families who tested first, who installed the right treatment for what the test found, who know exactly what is in the glass before a small person drinks it, those families sleep through the night with a specific kind of quiet.
Not because the water is fancy.
Because they know what it is.
