Advancing Skills in Forestry: Timber Harvester Learnership Launch

FATO NPC, in partnership with Kwamhlati Training Services, is proud to announce the successful rollout of the Timber Harvester Learnership programme in collaboration with the Mondi Group, including SQF and appointed contractors.

This initiative is funded through the FP&M SETA discretionary funding window, demonstrating a strong commitment to skills development, youth empowerment, and industry transformation within the forestry sector.

A total of 10 unemployed learners have been selected to participate in this programme. As part of the recruitment process, all learners completed Dover assessments to ensure suitability for the technical and operational demands of modern forestry harvesting.

The learnership officially commenced in March 2026 in KwaMbonambi, marking the beginning of a structured and intensive training journey.

In line with global advancements in forestry mechanisation, the programme embraces modern technology through the use of harvester simulators. These tools will play a key role in equipping learners with practical, hands-on operational skills in a safe and controlled environment, preparing them for real-world harvesting operations.

The Timber Harvester Learnership will run over a full year and includes 11 structured modules, covering both theoretical knowledge and practical competencies. The programme is scheduled for completion in February 2027.

Through this initiative, FATO NPC and its partners continue to drive innovation, safety, and sustainability in forestry operations while creating meaningful employment pathways for young people.

Together, we are shaping the future of mechanised harvesting and building a skilled workforce for tomorrow’s forestry industry.

Evaluation of the Contractor Worker Capacity Training Programme

An evaluation was conducted for the Proto Team Refresher course delivered to Lens Forestry under the Mondi South Africa contractor worker capacity training programme. The training, facilitated by Ayanda Zungu of LESH, took place on 25 March 2026 at the Lens (Gaywood) training venue, with attendance recorded on 26 March 2026.
The purpose of the unit standard is to equip participants with the competencies required for effective wildfire suppression. This includes understanding fire behaviour, applying manual firefighting techniques, communicating through verbal and hand signals, operating water hose equipment, and conducting mop-up procedures following fire containment.

The facilitator demonstrated strong subject knowledge and the ability to communicate complex firefighting principles in a clear and accessible manner. Training delivery encouraged active learner participation and included practical demonstrations to reinforce theoretical knowledge. Learners engaged in a structured tool inspection exercise, where they demonstrated their understanding of firefighting equipment and its application. In addition, participants performed safety checks relevant to field operations, as well as practical exercises such as fire extinguishing techniques, hose handling, and timed pipe drills.

The programme also incorporated an explanation and sign-off of the Work Safe Work Procedure (WSWP), ensuring that all learners were aligned with safety requirements. Plans for continued development were outlined, with further practical training integrated with fitness assessments, including a 5 km power walk, step-up exercises, and aerobic conditioning, in line with Proto Team requirements.

The training content was well aligned with Mondi’s work instruction on Safety at Fires. The role of the Proto Team (supporting fire suppression through initial attack strategies using water and Compressed Air Foam Systems (CAFS), and progressing to mop-up operations) was clearly defined and reinforced throughout the training.

Participant feedback was positive. Learners highlighted the facilitator’s expertise and adaptability, particularly in addressing language barriers. The use of simplified explanations and, where necessary, home language communication contributed to improved understanding and engagement. Overall, learners demonstrated a strong willingness to participate and a positive attitude towards the training.

In conclusion, the training programme was effectively delivered, aligned with operational requirements, and successful in enhancing the skills and readiness of the Proto Team members.

W**d Control Refresher Training Conducted at Mondi Kwambonambi Nursery

On 26 February 2026, a W**d Control Refresher training session was successfully conducted at Mondi Kwambonambi Nursery. The training, facilitated by Zakhele Jobe and provided by SAFTC, brought together contractor teams from Zanzile and Khubazi under the Mondi South Africa grower company.
The primary objective of the training intervention was to reinforce essential knowledge and practical skills related to chemical w**d control. Key focus areas included preparation for chemical application, correct methods of applying herbicides to w**ds, adherence to safe working procedures when handling agrochemicals, and proper maintenance of spraying equipment.

The facilitator demonstrated a high level of expertise and a strong grasp of the subject matter. This was evident in the way learners engaged positively throughout the session. Zakhele Jobe maintained a patient and approachable teaching style, ensuring that all questions were addressed thoroughly. Critical topics such as accurate chemical mixing, the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and the identification of invasive alien plant species were covered effectively, contributing to a deeper understanding among participants.

Training materials were well structured and supported the learning process. Handouts were distributed, and a refresher component was included to revisit previously covered content. The training guides were used strategically to highlight key concepts, ensuring that learners could grasp and retain important information.

The training aligned fully with Mondi’s work instructions. Practical elements emphasized included equipment pre-inspection procedures, such as conducting basic knapsack maintenance checks, as well as the importance of pre-work and daily risk assessments through toolbox talks. Safe chemical spraying practices were also reinforced, including the need for frequent hydration and adequate rest breaks during operations.

Participant feedback was positive. Lindani Mthiyane (ID: 9101017676088) reported that the facilitator communicated clearly and created a comfortable environment for asking questions. This openness encouraged active participation and contributed to an interactive and effective learning experience.

Overall, the training session was successful in reinforcing safe, efficient, and compliant w**d control practices, supporting both operational standards and worker safety within Mondi South Africa.

📚 World Book Day 📚

Although World Book Day was yesterday, the value of books continues to shape us long after the day has passed. Books play an important role in our lives, they expand our knowledge, fuel imagination, and offer new perspectives that influence both our personal growth and the way we work.

At FATO, we marked the occasion by bringing our favourite characters into the office, creating a fun and meaningful way to celebrate the stories that inspire us. Pamela Naidoo and Jash Phillips drew inspiration from the enchanting world of wizards and magic, while Nomfundo Molefe embraced the timeless classic of Matilda, showing how diverse and impactful stories can be.

It’s a reminder that books are more than just pages, they are a source of inspiration that stays with us every day.
