You finally get through the first coat.

It's patchy, but you know that's normal. So you think...

Then you put on the second coat...

And somehow it looks far worse. 😩

- More roller marks.
- Some areas look heavier.
- Some still look lighter.

Now you're wondering if you've actually made things worse.

Here's what may be happening:

If you're repeatedly going back over areas that are starting to dry, you can disturb the finish instead of improving it.
Yes 😁

❌ Here's What NOT to do:

Don't keep chasing individual patches while the paint is drying.

✅ What to do:

Finish the coat evenly and leave it alone.

Let it dry properly before deciding whether you actually need another coat.

If another coat is needed, apply it evenly rather than repeatedly working one area.

The goal isn't to make every section perfect while you're painting. Build the finish, coat by coat.
For goodness sake, let your paint dry before each coat...😅

You open the tin, load your roller and start painting.

Then you notice tiny lumps in the paint.

Don't be tempted to just brush them on the wall, thinking they'll disappear once they're on the wall.

They won't.🙈

Before you continue:

❌ Don't keep rolling and hope for the best.

✅ Stir the paint thoroughly.
✅ Check whether the lumps are dried paint or debris.
✅ Remove any skin or larger pieces before using the paint.
✅ If necessary, strain the paint before putting it into your tray.

A smooth finish starts with smooth paint.

Don't make your wall the place where you discover something is wrong with the paint.

Bought too little paint?
Then it runs out of paint halfway through the job.🙈

So you think no problem- you'll just buy another tin of the same colour.

Except when you do, the new paint doesn't quite match what's already on the wall.😁

This can happen even when the same colour formula is used, particularly when you're working with different batches.

To avoid the headache:

✅ Estimate how much paint you'll need before starting.
✅ Check the manufacturer's coverage information.
✅ If you're painting a large area, try to buy enough paint from the same batch.
✅ If you need another batch, compare it with the existing paint before covering the wall.

Running out of paint is inconvenient. Running out of paint and discovering the new batch doesn't match is a whole different headache and expense.

Getting a clean line where two colours meet is the trickiest parts of DIY painting.
No kidding!🙈

And trying to make it perfect in one long stroke usually makes things harder.
Well your hand makes sure it never happens, as it doesn't stop twitching😁

But where there's a will, there's a way...ok?

Try this instead:

✅ Load your brush with a manageable amount of paint.
✅ Start slightly away from the edge and work the paint towards your line.
✅ Keep your hand steady and use controlled strokes.
✅ Work in small sections rather than trying to cut the entire wall in one go.

And don't keep going back over paint that has already started drying.

A clean cutting-in line is more about control than speed.

Ever painted a wall that looked perfectly smooth before you started, but then as you paint, suddenly you notice bump, dip here each time the paint goes on?

You’re not imagining it.

Paint can make surface imperfections much more visible, especially when light hits the wall from the side.

Yep!🙈

What not to do:

❌ Don’t keep adding coats hoping the imperfections will disappear. Oh Geez No. More paint won’t hide a bumpy surface.

What to do:

✅ Let the paint dry completely.
✅ Check the wall for bumps, dents and visible sanding marks.
✅ Sand down raised areas and fill deeper imperfections where necessary.
✅ Remove the dust before applying another coat.

The better the surface preparation, the better the final finish.

ok guys let's be honest
your first coat is going be patchy, ok?
Fact.
When you standing there you will suddenly wonder if you've made a terrible life decision. 🥹

But relax. The first coat is usually about building coverage, not delivering the finished masterpiece. Once you learn that, everything else is a walk in a park, ok we lie..😁.let's just say it gets easier

When you see those patchy areas:
❌Do not immediately go back over them with more paint while the coat is still wet. This can leave you with uneven coverage, visible roller marks and areas that take much longer to dry.

✔What to do instead: finish the coat, step away from the wall and let it dry properly. Once it's dry, you'll see what actually needs attention. Then go in with your second coat and build your coverage evenly.

And remember, full coverage takes three or more coats depending on the colour, surface and paint you're using.
Your paint is not failing because coat one isn't giving you the Pinterest reveal. 😂

Build the finish. Don't fight the paint.

Paint looked perfectly fine in the can. Then you put it on the wall and suddenly it has a whole new personality. 😭

Some areas are drinking up more paint than others, your wall may be the culprit.
Let us elaborate.

✔Old paint, filler, repairs and different areas of porosity can all absorb paint differently.

What you don't want to do:
❌keep loading more and more paint onto these misbehaving areas while paint is still wet. You may think you're fixing the problem, but you're just adding more wet paint to an area that hasn't finished drying yet.

What to do instead: finish your coat, let it dry properly, then look at the wall again. Once it's dry, you'll know where you actually need more coverage. Add your next coat evenly and let the paint build up gradually.

Paint isn't always misbehaving. Sometimes the wall is simply telling you it needs another coat. 👀

You've finished painting.

You step back.

Hmm.

One section looks darker.
Another looks lighter.
The shaded area looks completely different from the part in the sun.

Panic.

Why does paint have mood swings?
One side is fine, the other is not giving...

Here is why👇👇👇

Paint can dry at different rates across the same wall depending on sunlight, shade, temperature and airflow.

And with deeper colours, those differences can be especially noticeable while the paint is still drying.

❌ What NOT to do:

Don't grab the roller and start adding more paint to the areas that look darker.

✅ What to do:

Leave it alone.

Let the entire coat dry for the recommended drying time.

Then --and only then--stand back and judge the finish.

🎯 Takeaway: If the wall is still drying, you don't know what the final finish looks like yet.

You thought the hard part was painting the wall.

Wrong

Then you realise you're basically painting outdoors, where everything has an opinion. 😂

Dust blows onto the wet paint.

An insect decides to take a stroll across your freshly painted section.

A plant brushes against the wall.

And suddenly you're trying to rescue a finish you were very proud of five minutes ago.

❌ What NOT to do:

Don't start painting without looking at what's around the wall.

✅ What to do:

Before you paint:

👉 Move plants away from the surface.
👉 Remove loose bits and debris.
👉 Clean the wall properly.
👉 Choose a time when wind is manageable.
👉 Keep an eye on the surface while the paint is wet.

🎯 Takeaway: When you're painting outside, you're not just preparing the wall. You're preparing the whole environment around it.

Ok someone please put your hand up if you have had this happen to you...

You finish your paint.

You realise you need more.

No problem. You have the colour code. Easy.

You go to the paint shop, ask them to mix a bigger for you (20 litres) and you get home feeling confident.

Put the paint on the wall.
Same colour.

Except...

This new paint instead of being an identical twin, it's a close relative😩

The new batch doesn't quite look like the colour you already have on the wall.

WTF?

Well, this can happen because paint colour isn't simply a matter of multiplying a formula. The base, tinting and mixing can all affect the final result.

❌ What NOT to do:

Don't assume the colour code means the new batch will automatically be identical to the paint already on your wall.

✅ What to do:

If you're continuing an existing project, take some of the original paint or a sample from the actual painted surface to the paint supplier.

And if you know you're going to need a lot of paint, buying enough from the same batch can help avoid this problem altogether.

🎯 Takeaway: The formula is a recipe. The actual paint on your wall is the reference.
