The year that was…part 2

Thanks to everyone who commented, encouraged and reached out after our last blog post. It was lovely to hear from so many of you! Now as promised, although a few weeks delayed, I will aim to finish the update around Wellspring farm - our laying hens, our turkeys, our new cabin, visitors from overseas, interns and the big fire in the valley....

The year that was…

2025 is now on the brink of being neither future or present, but only history! Time flies when you are having fun. Time flies when you are busy. Time flies when you are on a farm. And one thing that keeps escaping me is writing these blogs! Is anyone even reading them anymore? Maybe leave a comment so i can see if it worth making blog writing a New Year's resolution......

Hello friends, remember us? I know, my updates have been shockingly sparse, for which I apologise wholeheartedly. Rather than wallow in the regret of unwritten blog posts, let me catch you up on what has been happening on Wellspring Farm. We are definitely enjoying the turning seasons as we come out of what has been our toughest summer thus far. The heat was not too bad, although we had several days that peaked above 40°C and long stretches where everyday was above 30°C....

In year one, we travelled to Suurbrak (just past Swellendam) and fetched our first two cows - Denise and Flo. Flo (short for Florence according to some in the family, although a birth certificate has never been produced to either confirm or refute such claims) came to us 'in calf'. In other words she was expecting a calf, and we thought that said baby would make his/her grand entry two months after arriving with us....

As promised, here is another post following close on the heels of the last. And in this I want to invite you to come and experience a rather unique weekend away. Over a year ago, we put a lot of effort into rescuing and setting up the old shepherd's cottage at the back of the farm. It was an amazing restoration project, lead for a large part by the amazing friend of Wellspring, Jorg....

Days, weeks and months have flown by and I have failed to keep writing and sharing the farm adventure with you all. Well, late is better than never, so let me try to write a few blogs close together to catch you all up. The last blog I wrote was about Josh and Ben's incredible journey in Robotics when they were trying to raise money to compete in the World Championships for the FTC robotics competition....

Hello everyone, we are super excited to let you know that our team, alongside our World Championship Winning Alliance Partner, The Clueless, from San Diego, have joined forces to spread FTC throughout South Africa. Our initiative, IGNITE Robotics International, aims to expose new students to the FIRST Tech Challenge robotics, provide training for fundamental technical skills, and support teams throughout the season with mentorship from some of the best teams in the world.

For an introduction to FIRST Tech Challenge and IGNITE robotics, please sign up for one of our info sessions here: https://forms.gle/nL8kE1ee9Cf725aA6

You can also join our discord server which is where further communication, advice/ mentorship channels, and any workshops (including the info session) will be held. In the meantime, feel free to watch our teaser video https://youtu.be/V2cJhmhxSt0?si=FtZ1bBGE_NVWKYIY

Please feel free to forward this to as many people as you know who might be interested in robotics.

I know that there are so many amazing tech solutions in agriculture right now. From flying drones to spray trees (not that we would spray trees ourselves), to geo-fencing of livestock, to probes measuring soil fertility and moisture, to tractors that drive themselves based on last year's data on specific field conditions, to micro-chips tracking cows breeding cycles. It is all amazing what can be done with technology!...

Wow, so many times I have set my heart and mind to write an update but then have been distracted, or just plain lazy. Let me try give you a very quick update of what has been happening on the farm since our last blog. So much! The last blog was about Amber, our favourite cow, unexpectedly dying. A sad, sad day....

"You cannot have livestock without dead stock" A moniker that we have heard many times. A reality we have experienced when we have lost a few sheep and chickens. We understand that this is part of farming. Animals die. And to be honest I haven't found dealing with this aspect of farming too difficult up to this point. For sure, I have been discouraged and sad when a sheep has died....
