Recently I was asked to quote on replacing a corner cabinet in a kitchen that got some water damage. It is what we call a "special cut" as the wood needs to be cut into an L shape. The carcass is built from plain white. Then you have the 2 narrow Doors and a side panel that is cut from the specific colour sheet to match the kitchen. Simple and straight forward right?

Here comes the issue: the person that asked me for the quote is renting there. The cupboard was damaged due to a water leak from the quartz top that wasn't sealed properly. He reported it to the landlord who turned around and said the tenant is responsible for the repair costs. The owner went ahead and got 2 x quotes. One of them was R8500! The second was R6800. My quote came in far less than that and yes I am still making my profit.

This case has actually gone to court due to the owner wanting to charge the tenant such a ridiculous amount of money! The person that quoted the highest is also a friend of the owner.

My question is why would a landlord and a cabinet maker charge that kind of price if they know for a fact that that costing does not come close to what the product actually cost? Yes it is tough out there and we as small business owners have to fight to get business but it is guys like that that makes it difficult for us to be trusted with our prices! Of course then you get the opposite end of the scale too.

My view is simple: I'd rather take twice as long to make a million than making it by being dishonest and overcharging my customers.

Recently I was asked by Engen Oil Centre Port Elizabeth to upgrade their reception area. We had a bit of a brainstorming session and came up with the metal and grey look. I completed the build in a weekend but a small error caused damage to one part of the top. This resulted in me replacing it the following weekend and during that week we discussed adding lights.

Out with the old and in with the new! Yesterday morning I started with upgrading the reception area of a local business. While everyone was enjoying the rugby I was enjoying myself building the desk.

Again this was a new challenge for me as I had to incorporate weird angles and glass. Today when the owner walked in to see if everything will be ready for business tomorrow morning, he was speechless. He couldn't believe that I managed to do all of this in 2 days.

There is no greater satisfaction than seeing the look on the client's face when they see the product for the first time! Knowing that I have done far more than what the client envisioned and that they are blown away is the greatest reward!

Thank you to the client for giving us the opportunity again to turn your dream into a reality! I look forward to taking on the next challenge!

This was done as a surprise for my wife. The drawers inside the tall units will be finished off with nice drawer faces. Those drawers were designed for all of her shoes! Now there is no excuse for not having space 🤣. The rest of the units will be for clothes. I will be adding a mirror and LED lights in her tall unit.
