Electricity Restoration Timelines on the Chelsea–Arlington–Walmer–Summerstrand Line

OFFICIAL COMMS FROM METRO

Friday, 20 March 2026 | 09:40

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality wishes to inform residents of the timelines for the restoration of power supply. Based on the extent of the damage to the transmission infrastructure, the restoration process is expected to take approximately 21 days. This timeline reflects the scale and complexity of the work required to rebuild and stabilize the network.

To provide clarity on the current restoration process, the following critical steps must be completed:
β€’ Demolition of damaged infrastructure: Nine collapsed and compromised towers must be safely dismantled. This includes the careful removal (stripping) of existing conductors to ensure a safe working environment.
β€’ Installation of new structures: A total of twelve monopoles will be installed to replace the damaged towers and enhance the strength of the network.
β€’ Foundation preparation: A total of Sixty holes (inclusive of Stays and monopoles) need to be excavated to secure the new structures. This includes five holes per pole, one for the monopole and four for stabilizing stays, all of which must meet strict engineering standards.
β€’ Excavation and bush clearing: The affected areas require clearing and preparation to allow access to heavy machinery and ensure safe working conditions.
β€’ Site establishment: This involves setting up safety measures, equipment staging areas, and operational logistics before major construction work can begin.
β€’ Transportation of materials: Monopoles, conductors, and other specialized materials must be delivered to site, requiring careful coordination due to their size and weight.
β€’ Final installation and connection: This includes the dressing of poles and the stringing of approximately six kilometers of conductor to reconnect the line and restore electricity supply.

Each of these steps is essential to ensure that repairs are completed safely, effectively, and in compliance with engineering standards. While every effort is being made to expedite the process, safety and quality remain the top priorities.

It is important to note that the affected structure is part of a transmission line that has already been identified for refurbishment under the Municipality’s phased infrastructure upgrade plan. A tender for these upgrades has been advertised and is currently at an advanced stage of evaluation, with implementation set to begin soon thereafter. The Municipality remains committed to strengthening and proactively maintaining its electricity infrastructure, with a clear focus on enhancing long-term reliability and resilience for the community.

We understand how challenging this situation is for affected communities. The Municipality continues to explore all possible interim relief measures and will keep residents informed through regular updates as progress is made.

We sincerely thank residents and businesses for their patience, resilience, and understanding during this difficult time. We fully recognize the disruption caused and remain committed to restoring electricity supply as quickly and safely as possible.
